The container is located, with the material therein, in a chamber 1, the pressure within the chamber is reduced to less than 10<SP>-1</SP> torr and, the top layer of the is fused to the wall of the container after which it solidifies to form a seal welded to the wall and cooperating therewith to enclose totally the remainder of the material. The material may be in powder, granular or tablet form, in which latter case the top tablet, is partly or wholly fused to the wall. In other examples the top layer may have the same composition as the wall, which may be of metal or plastics, e.g. P.V.C. In Fig. 1, electron beam welding is used to fuse the material, the welding device including the vacuum chamber 1. The containers are transported on interconnected conveyer belts 3a-3c and a vibrating device 5 compacts the powder material. Means for maintaining the material in the container 4b during welding may be as shown, electromagnetic coils 10, if the material is magnetizable. In Fig. 5, rotating friction welding discs 36a, 36b are alternatively used to weld both ends of the container 39 simultaneously. The sealed containers produced are said to be particularly suitable for extrusion into bars or tubes of round or other section.

The invention relates to the processing of metals by pressure, and in particular to containers for isostatic pressing of products from powders and granules.
A container for isostatic pressing of products from powders and granules is known, containing a sealed thin-walled shell with machined material located inside it. The container is equipped with tubular shafts connected by connecting means to a vacuum unit. After creating a vacuum in the container, it is sealed by 15 sealing and subsequent partial cutting of the tubular trunks £ l].
