1533648 Identifying recording speed of a prerecorded tape AMPEX CORP 8 Dec 1976 [19 March 1976] 51320/76 Heading G5R To identify the speed at which a pre-recorded tape 12 was recorded, the tape 12 is driven at any playback speed in a recorder/reproducer to replay a control track 16 on the tape, the ratio of the frequency of a capstan tacho 20 signal to that of a component of the replayed control track signal is measured, and a ratio-dependent logic level is developed indicative of the recording speed. 15 and 7 i.p.s. quadruplex video tapes each carry a control track 16 which when played at the correct speed has a 240 Hz signal. The capstan tacho 20 gives 3À84 KHz and 1À92 KHz at 15 and 7¢ i.p.s. respectively. The control track signal passes to a multiple capacitor filter 22 of a commutating filter 24 which acts like a synchronous detector working simultaneously at T/16 and T/8, where T is the capstan tacho frequency. The output of filter 24 passes to divide-by-eight 30, the output of which causes monostables 32, 34 to supply clock pulses to D- type flip-flop 38 and reset pulses to a divider 28 counting the tacho pulses. If a 7¢ i.p.s. tape is replayed at 7¢ or 15 i.p.s., filter 24 gives 240 Hz or 480 Hz respectively and divider 28 is reset every 1/30 or 1/60 sec. respectively, divider 28 repeatedly counting up to 64 in either case, i.e. below a threshold of 96 so that flip-flop 38 gives a low logic output indicating 7¢ i.p.s. Standard recording speed. Similarly for a 15 i.p.s. tape replayed at 7¢ i.p.s. or 15 i.p.s., filter 24 output is 120 Hz or 240 Hz respectively, and divider 28 repeatedly counts to 128 so that flipflop 38 gives a high logic output indicating 15 i.p.s. standard recording speed.

The disadvantage of this device is the considerable length of the process of determining the nominal value of the standard speed of movement of the magnetic tape during recording.
