NATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 30 Sept 1976 40576/76 Heading G5R A flexible record disc 1 is supported during rotation by an air bearing over a backing plate 3 which is bent upwardly along at least one, but preferably two, chords 7, 8 on either side of the radial slot 4 through which the head 5 accesses the underside of the disc, in order to restrict disturbance of the air bearing in the region of the head 5. The chords may be parallel, asymmetric or symmetric, but preferably define a tapering central area narrower at the slot 4. The plate 2C may be mounted in a cartridge, Fig. 9 (not shown), in which case the uppermost plate tips are rounded downwardly to save height.

The proposed device contains a rotating shaft 1, rigidly fixed in a flexible disk carrier 2 records. The surface of the flexible disk recording medium 2 is located against the guiding plane of the fixed stabilizing element 3, made with a slot groove 4, in which the recording and reproducing head 5 is mounted with the possibility of radial movement. The stabilizing element 3 is made with segmented shaped strips 6, the surfaces of which are located at acute angles to its guide plane against the surface of the flexible disk recording medium 2. In this case, the chords 7, along which the surfaces of the segmented protrusions 6 are intersected by the guide plane of the stabilizing element 3, are located on opposite sides of its slot-like groove 4. The device also contains a cassette 8 in which the stabilizing element 3 and its segmental protrusions 6 are located. the element 3 is made in the form of a plate bent along the chords 7, and the surface of the segmental-like protrusions 6 of the extrusions are flat. The chords 7 are arranged symmetrically with respect to the slit-like groove. 4, and the acute angles between the guide plane of the stabilizing element 3 and the surfaces of the segmented projections 6 are equal to 8. In addition, the ends of the chords 7 from the side of the slot-like groove 4 are located closer to one another than their opposite ends.

The latter and the guide surface of the stabilizing element 6 and the surfaces of its segmented protrusions 6 create a supporting layer of air. This provides a high rotational stability of the flexible disk recording medium 2.

also provides a significant simplicity in the design of the device for rotating the disk recording medium.

Claims (7)

1. An apparatus for rotating a recording disc medium comprising
Q rotating shaft rigidly fixed in a flexible disk record carrier, the surface of which is located the protrusion of the guide plane of the fixed stabilizing element made with a slot-like groove in which the recording and reproducing head is installed with the possibility of radial movement, in order to reduce rotational instability flexible disk recording media, the stabilizing element is made with segmented protrusions, the surfaces of which are located at acute angles to its direction rail against the plane surface of the elastic disk recording medium, and the chord for which the surface protrusions are crossed segment-guide plane of the stabilizing element arranged on opposite sides of the slot-like groove.
