1457407 Automatic control of speed RCA CORPORATION 19 March 1974 [20 March 1973] 13265/73 Heading G3R A speed-control system for video disc playback apparatus uses (i) a "low frequency" speed correction system 15 maintaining the average speed (as defined below) between the disc and a pick-up stylus 12 at a pre-set value and (ii) a "high frequency" speed correction system 20 that varies the position of the stylus with respect to the disc so as to maintain the instantaneous relative speed between them at the pre-set value. Signals in the pick-up playback signal are used to delay the operation of system 20 relative to the initiation of system 15. The average velocity is said to be the speed with high frequency errors averaged out. As shown, system 15 comprises a motor 13 tending to drive the disc overspeed and a brake 17, to control the disc speed to the pre-set value and energized according to the error between the average frequency of horizontal sync. signals in the playback signal and a desired frequency. After switching on, and to allow for initial positioning of the pick-up, system 15 is not energized until the first vertical sync. signal is received following a time delay corresponding to four horizontal sync. signals. After a further delay during which system 15 stabilizes the average disc speed; the system 20 is energized to afford control of the instantaneous disc speed. Details of the sync. separating circuit 21, and the circuit 76, that switches on the speedcontrol systems 15, 20 are given in Fig. 2 and 3 respectively (not shown). an electrically conductive material and placed in the spiral groove of the video plate 2, the change in the relief of which contains information about the recorded video signal. Video plate 2 is made with a dielectric coating placed by a meled of its metal layer and a reproducing needle 1. Video plate 2 is mounted on a rotating disk 3 connected via a belt 4 to an electric motor 5. The reproducing needle 1 is connected via a transducer video generator 6 to an output bus 7 connected to a television receiver and to a selector of 8 sync pulses. The latter is equipped with an output of 9 frame sync pulses and an output of 10 horizontal sync pulses connected via a driver AND of a signal for deviating the average speed of rotation of disk 3 to node 12 of braking disk 3. The device also contains a shaper 13 of the instantaneous rotational speed of the disk 3, connected between the output of 10 horizontal sync pulses and the node 14 and the displacement of the reproducing needle 1. The output of 9 frame sync pulses of the selector 8 of sync pulses is connected to the capacitor 16, the resistor 17 and the first threshold element 18. The latter is connected to capacitor 19, resistor 20, shaper 11 of the deviation signal of the average rotational speed of the disk 3 and to the second threshold element 21. The latter is connected through a key 22 with a reproducing needle moving unit 14 1. In the proposed device, the control of the average speed of rotation of the disk 3 is produced by adjusting the braking of the latter by means of the braking unit 12. Vibration reduction four the speed of rotation of the disk 3 near its midpoint is accomplished by adjusting the position of the reproducing needle 1 through the movement unit 14. The use of the invention makes it possible to significantly reduce the error in controlling the movement of a video plate relative to a reproducing needle and provides a fairly simple design of the device for controlling movement of a video plate relative to a reproducing needle.
