A process and apparatus for continuously forming a product having elongate members (10) at least about one foot long which are oriented, compressed and bonded. The process comprises depositing elongate members (10) on a moving carrier (39) with an orientation that is substantially parallel to the direction of movement of said carrier (39), said members (14) being deposited on said carrier (39) over a length of carrier (39) that is at least as long as about one-half times the length of the elongate members (10) and is at least as long as about 30 times the final thickness of the compressed, composite product. The apparatus comprises a first conveyor (30) along which elongate members (10) travel, said elongate members (10) being arranged transverse to the direction of travel of said first conveyor (30). This first conveyor (30) feeds a second conveyor (33) which is arranged to move transversely of said first conveyor (30) and to collect said elongate members (10). The second conveyor (33) then feeds a third conveyor (39) whereupon the final product is formed.

Claim
1. A method for continuously forming a layered structure from oriented elongated elements, at least about 1 foot (300 mm) long ( oriented ^ pressed and glued together to produce a combined material, comprising laying the elongated elements on a moving carrier means, orientation parallel to the direction of movement carrier means, characterized in that, in order to increase strength and improve the physical properties of the combined material, the elongated elements are laid on a section of the carrier means with normed mat length of not less than 1.5 the length of elongated elements, and at least 30 times greater than the thickness of the compacted composite material, while the average value of the angle of inclination of the vertical elongate elements in the composite material does not exceed 2 ° "
