The cathode comprises a stainless steel hanger bar 11 having a flat undersurface 12 with end portions 13 adapted to rest upon supports and electrical contacts, a flat stainless steel starter sheet 14 welded by its upper edge to the undersurface 12 between the end portions 13 so as to extend perpendicularly from said undersurface, the bar 12 and at least the marginal upper portion of the sheet 14 by which it is welded to the under-surface 12 of the bar being clad (e.g. plated) with copper as represented by the stippling. This invention relates to cathodes for the electrolytic refining of copper in aqueous electrolytes.
The purpose of the invention is to provide reusable cathode.

The cathode contains a bar I, made in the form of an I-beam made of stainless steel, a matrix sheet 2 with holes 3 for lifting the cathode, a protective coating 4 on the side edges of the matrix sheet, made of organic material in the form of a rope with a groove. Holes 5 are made on the side vertical edges of the sheet and in the bundle; the sheet is fixed to the bundle on the studs 6 that pass through these holes. The boundary of the groove of the harness with the matrix sheet is sealed with a wax coating. The matrix sheet is attached to the rod, perpendicular to its lower surface by welding 7, and the rod and the upper part of the sheet adjacent to it are galvanically coated with copper.
The cathode, charged in this way, is hung in an electrolysis cell with electrolyte and copper is deposited on it for a certain period of time. Upon reaching the optimum thickness of the cathode sediment, the cathode is removed from the bath and the sediment is removed from it. The cathode is then re-hung in the bath for the next cycle.
