Brief Description of the Drawings Figure 1 shows, by way of example and in perspective, a schematic view of a machine which can be used to carry out the method according to the invention. Figure 2 is a view taken by arrow 2 in Figure 1. Figure 3 shows in LEGO style parts of figure 2. Figures 4 and 5 show as an example consecutive roll forming steps for roll forming a flat metal strip. Figure 6 schematically shows the roll forming in one of the steps shown in figure 4. Figure 7 shows the roll forming following the roll forming shown in Figure 6. Figure 8 shows the roll formation of a profile with bent corners. Figure 9 shows in perspective an example of a beam above the windscreen of a vehicle. Description of the example shown Figure 1 shows the first seven roll forming stations. A complete machine usually has multiple number of roll forming stations in a row. The machine has a frame 11 carrying seven pairs of guides each slidably supporting a carrier 14. The first pair of guides 13 with the first carrier 14 of the first roll forming station 12 is shown in Figure 2. The carrier 14 comprises a cradle so that its upper part 15 becomes tiltable laterally. This upper part carries an intermediate piece 16 which is rotatable about a vertical axis 1. The intermediate piece carries two pair of roller pairs 17,18 which are each laterally displaceable laterally. The roller pair holder 17 carries two forming rollers 19,20 on parallel shaft pins 21,22 and these shaft pins are carried by two blocks 23,24 which are individually displaceable in height so that the position of the shaft pins in height can be adjusted separately. The roller pair holders 17,18 are illustrated in a simplified LEGO style in Figure 3. The roller pair holder 18 has two forming rollers 29,30, shaft pins 31,32, and blocks 33,34. Figure 4 shows three steps in the forming of a blank in the form of a flat metal strip 35 into a hat profile 36 and Figure 6 shows a first forming step in the first roll forming station 12 which gives the blank 35 an intermediate profile with two corners. The shaft pin 21 of the forming roller 19 has the axis of rotation II, the shaft pin 22 of the forming roller 20 has the axis of rotation III, the shaft pin 31 of the forming roller 29 has the axis of rotation IV and the shaft pin 32 of the forming roller 30 has the axis of rotation V. During forming, the strip is held between the pair of rollers 19,20 and between the pair of rollers 29,30 and is formed over the rounded edges 38,39 of the rollers 19,30 and runs freely between these edges. In the next forming step, the second, right, side of the hat profile is similarly formed in the next roll forming station as shown in Fig. 7. In the third forming station, the next forming step is performed on the left side again and so on. Thus, in every other forming station, two corners 41,42 on one side and two corners 43,44 on the other side are successively formed until the corners of both sides are formed as shown in Figure 5. The control is better maintained by in this way alternate between the pages. Figure 5 shows continued roll forming on both sides of the hat profile formed according to Figure 4. Even in this shaping, one shapes alternately on one and the other side. Because the machine is so short and compact and has so many movement possibilities, the machine can be used to make profiles that have a varied profile along the length and that can be both double-curved and twisted. Tiltability increases the ability to make twisted profiles and allows you to bend corners with angles over 90 degrees and also form Z-like profile shapes. Figure 8 shows the bending of a blank to a profile 45 with over-bent corners and Figure 9 shows a double-curved windscreen beam above the windscreen of a vehicle. This beam has a lengthwise varying cross section.

Claims (1) [1] A method of rolling a sheet metal strip (35) by driving the sheet metal strip through a row of forming stations (12) with pairs of rollers (19,20; 29,30) facing each other which both hold the sheet metal strip between them and forms the sheet metal strip over rolling edges, characterized in that in every other forming station (12) two corners (41,42) are successively formed and in every other forming station two other corners (43,44) are successively formed. Method according to claim 1, characterized in that during the forming in a forming station (12) the sheet metal strip (35) is held between the two pairs of rollers (19,20; 29,30) and is formed over rounded edges (38,39) of a roll (19, 30) of the respective pair of rollers and run freely between these edges. Method according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that it is carried out by using a roll forming machine comprising a stand (11) and a row of forming stations (12) comprising carriers (14, 15) for roller pair holders (17, 18) laterally displaceable mounted on the frame, a spacer (16) rotatably mounted on each carrier (14,15) to be rotatable about a vertical axis (I) and two roller pair holders (17,18) laterally slidably mounted on each spacer, each roller pair holders comprise two shaft pins (21,22; 31,32) for carrying a forming roller (19,20; 29,30) each and the two roller pair holders have their shaft pins directed towards each other. Method according to claim 3, characterized in that it is carried out by using said roll-forming machine in which the intermediate piece (16) is tiltable laterally. Method according to claim 3 or 4, characterized in that it is carried out by using a said roll forming machine in which the roller pins of the roller pair holders (21, 22; 31, 32) can be raised and lowered.
