FIELD OF THE INVENTION The invention relates to a method of controlling an individual having an identity document such as a passport, comprising an automatic reading area on which a document number appears, and an electronic chip in which is stored a biometric authentication data of the individual. The invention applies in particular to the control of individuals for access to a protected area or service such as access to the boarding of an aircraft.
STATE OF THE ART
An identity check is sometimes required when an individual enters a protected area or service, such as when crossing a border or boarding a plane.
Electronic identity documents such as passports or electronic identity cards make it possible to implement an identity check by biometric authentication, that is to say by comparing a biometric data acquired on a biometric feature of the computer. individual to a biometric data prerecorded in a chip contained in the identity document.
Such documents allow for increased security because the biometric data contained in the document can be protected and signed by an official entity that has issued the document, which can be verified during the check.
They also make it possible to automate the identity checks carried out, by means of dedicated control devices, by letting the individuals themselves manipulate their passports to submit them, for reading, to a control device.
However, the physical manipulation of identity documents, including documents in the form of a booklet such as passports, can pose difficulties for the individual wishing to identify himself.
Indeed, the biometric data contained in the identity documents are protected in reading. It is necessary to access to obtain the number of the document of identity, which appears on a zone of automatic reading, also called MRZ (for the acronym of Machine-Readable Zone). Such an automatic reading zone is a part of the surface of the document (or, where appropriate, of one of its pages) comprising text printed in a standardized format, so that it can be read by a computer and deciphered by recognition Optical printed characters.
Therefore, to provide authentication, the individual must present the document to the particular page on which the automatic reading area is located, in a specific direction allowing a reader of the control device to read it. Once the number is acquired, it can be used to access the contents of the chip.
Therefore, failing to correctly present the identity document, the authentication of the individual may fail.
This stage of physical manipulation is time-consuming and tends to clog queues, for example in airports. It is also the cause of a substantial proportion of failures in the authentication of individuals.
It is therefore necessary, to unclog the queues at the crossing points, to limit as much as possible the manipulation of these documents to authenticate an individual during a check.
A solution to this problem has already been proposed. It plans to split in two the control step of the individual, in a first step in which a manipulation of the identity document is necessary, and a second step in which the authentication takes place, without manipulation of the document identity.
More specifically, during a first step, an individual manipulates his passport to position it correctly on a reader of a control device, which reads the automatic reading area of the passport, and accesses the biometric data, in this case an image of the individual's face, contained in the passport.
A number is associated with this biometric data, and a ticket bearing this number is issued to the individual. The data and the number are stored in a database.
In the second step, the individual presents the ticket to a second control device. This device reads the number written on the ticket and accesses the database to retrieve the corresponding biometric data.
At the same time, a photograph of the individual is taken by the control device, and this photograph is compared with the biometric data retrieved from the database (and which corresponds to that stored in the passport) to make the biometric authentication of the individual.
This solution therefore makes it possible to move the time-consuming step of handling the passport upstream of the authentication step that allows access to the secure zone, and to unclog the queue for this step.
However, this solution does not completely solve the problem, because the ticket issued to the individual represents an additional document to keep, which can be lost or exchanged. In addition, it is still necessary to handle this ticket in the second step, which can still take time and cause errors.
PRESENTATION OF THE INVENTION The purpose of the invention is to remedy the problem described above. In particular, one of the aims of the invention is to propose an automatic control method that minimizes the manipulation of documents by the individual.
Another object of the invention is to reduce the time required for the implementation of the authentication step.

The proposed invention facilitates the control method since the identity document manipulation step is separated from the authentication step and can even be implemented by the individual with a personal electronic device such as a mobile phone, in the place of your choice (eg at home).
In addition, the authentication step is facilitated since it is sufficient to acquire a new biometric data on the individual to be able to retrieve the number of the identity document and access the contents of the chip. It is therefore not necessary to manipulate the document to present the automatic reading area to a reader. In the case of a document in the form of a booklet such as a passport, it can even be presented closed to the control device, since this does not prevent the control device from accessing the contents of the chip.
In addition, no additional document is added to the identity document to implement the authentication.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF AT LEAST ONE EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION
Control system of individuals
Referring to Figure 1, an individual control system 1 is shown. This system makes it possible to perform the biometric authentication of individuals to authorize or prohibit the access of individuals to a zone or to a secure service.
To be able to carry out the control, the individual must have an identity document comprising an electronic chip, for example an RFID chip, in which is stored a biometric data item, acquired from a biometric feature of the individual.
The biometric data contained in the identity document is subsequently qualified as biometric authentication data.
The identity document also includes a number identifying said document, this number being printed on an automatic reading area or MRZ, that is to say a portion of the surface of the document or one of its pages, in a computer-readable format or equivalent processing unit capable of implementing optical character recognition.
The identity document is advantageously a passport, that is to say a document in the form of a booklet comprising covers and a set of pages, the automatic reading area appearing on one of the pages of the document. booklet, involving the opening to the right page and the correct positioning of the passport for reading this area.
The control system of individuals can for example allow to control individuals before boarding an airplane or before crossing the border of a country.
The individual control system 1 comprises a first control device 10, a memory 20, and a second control device 30.
The second control device 30 is advantageously arranged at the entrance of a secure access zone. It can take the form of a portico whose crossing by the individual is authorized only in case of successful control.
The first control device 10 is advantageously an electronic device personal to the individual, that is to say a personal computer, a mobile phone or a digital tablet.
Alternatively, it may be a fixed control structure such as a kiosk, located in the same infrastructure (eg the same building) as the control device 30 and remote thereof. For example, in the case of a control in an airport before boarding an airplane, the first control device may be located in the same starting terminal as the second. However, it is not located in the queue of the second control device to be able to split the flow of individuals using the two devices.
The first control device 10 comprises a computer 11, such as for example a processor, a microprocessor, a controller, etc.
It also comprises a module 12 for reading the contents of an automatic reading zone or MRZ of a document. The module 12 may for example comprise an image sensor 13, such as for example a digital camera or a digital camera, adapted to acquire an image of the automatic reading area, and a character recognition module 14. The module 14 may be a software application executable by the computer 11 or alternatively a hardware module. This may be the case when for example the first control device is the mobile phone or the tablet or the personal computer of the individual, and that this device is configured to perform character recognition. Alternatively, the image processing of the automatic reading area can be performed remotely if the device of the individual does not have this feature. In this case, the module 14 may be a software application executable by a computer of another processing unit remote from the first control device (not shown), and the first control device then comprises a communication interface with the unit. remote processing to send him the image of the automatic reading area on which the character recognition must be performed.
In addition, the control device 10 comprises a module 15 for acquiring a biometric data item on a biometric feature of an individual. The biometric feature may for example be the shape of the face, one or more fingerprints of the individual, or one or more irises of the individual. It may also be the structure of the venous network of one or more fingers or one or both hands, or respective sizes of phalanges or fingers.
The acquisition module of the biometric data item 15 comprises an image sensor, which is advantageously the sensor 13 indicated above, and an image processing module 16 adapted to extract a biometric data item from an image of a biometric feature. The extraction of the biometric data is implemented by a treatment of the image of the biometric trait which depends on the nature of the biometric trait. Various image processes for extracting biometric data are known to those skilled in the art. By way of non-limiting example, the extraction of the biometric data may comprise a minutiae extraction of the fingerprints from a fingerprint image. Alternatively, it may include an extraction of particular points or a shape of the face in the case where the image is an image of the face of the individual, etc.
Finally, the first control device 10 comprises a communication interface 17 remote with a memory 20 of the control system 1. This interface allows the computer 11 to exchange information with the memory 20. The memory 20 is advantageously distant from the first device As a result, the communication interface 17 is preferably the combination of a wireless communication interface, for example of the Wifi or Bluetooth type or mobile telephone network (GPRS, 3G, 4G or other) and any other downstream communication network linking to the memory 20.
Advantageously, but optionally, the first control device 10 may finally comprise an information acquisition interface 18 such as a keyboard, a touch screen, etc.
The second control device 30 comprises a computer 31, which can also be a processor, microprocessor, controller, etc.
It also comprises a biometric data acquisition module 32 on a biometric feature of an individual, which advantageously comprises an image sensor 33 adapted to acquire an image of a biometric feature of an individual, and a processing module 34 adapted to extract a biometric data from an image of a biometric feature, by appropriate treatment of the image of the biometric feature. The image sensor 33 may be for example a digital camera or a digital camera. As for the image processing module 16, the extraction technique implemented by the module 34 is known to those skilled in the art and depends on the nature of the biometric trait under consideration.
The memory 20 of the control system 1, already mentioned above, may be a memory integrated in the control device 30. In a variant, it may be a memory remote from the control device 30, advantageously a database. In this case, the latter also comprises a remote communication interface 35 with the memory 20.
Finally, the second control device 30 comprises a chip reader 36 of an identity document. Typically, the chip contained in the identity document is a radio frequency chip (for example an RFID radio-identification tag or a UHF chip), and the reader 36 is adapted to read the content of the chip remotely, by a communication radio frequencies with the chip.
The second control device 30 may also include an information capture interface 37 such as a keyboard, a touch screen, and so on.
The system 1 is adapted to implement the control method described below.
Method of controlling individuals
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, there is shown the main steps of a method of controlling an individual. This method makes it possible to verify that the individual who comes for the control corresponds to the person to whom the identity document has been issued, by carrying out a biometric authentication by comparing a freshly acquired biometric data item on the individual with the data item. biometric authentication stored in the chip contained in the document.
The method has a first step 100 implemented by the first control device 10. As we have seen, the first control device can be a personal device to the individual, the first step 100 can in this case be put implemented in any convenient place for the individual, and especially at home.
The first step 100 comprises a step 110 of reading the number of the identity document registered in the automatic reading area of the document. This step requires the individual to manipulate the identity document to present his document to the sensor 13, to the page of the automatic reading area, and with the automatic reading area in view of the acquisition zone of the sensor 13, that is to say presented in a position and in a direction allowing the sensor to acquire an image of the area. The reading module 12 of the first control device acquires an image of the automatic reading area and extracts the number of the document from this zone.
The first step 100 also comprises a step 120 of acquiring a first biometric data item on a biometric feature of the individual, by means of the module 12.
Alternatively, in step 120, several biometric data of the individual can be acquired on different biometric traits. For example, a first biometric data from the iris of the individual, and a second from the face, or fingerprint, etc. The order of succession of steps 110 and 120 is indifferent.
Then, during a step 130, the first control device 10 stores in the memory 20 the number of the identity document in connection with the first biometric data, or, where appropriate, each of the biometric data acquired in step 120. By way of nonlimiting example, a datum may be generated by the computer 11, comprising the number and the first biometric data, for example in the form of a doublet, and stored in the memory.
The fact of recording several biometric data in relation to the number of the identity document may allow the process to be compatible with different technologies implemented at different control points, or to increase the security of the process by using in the rest of the process several biometric data to find the number of the identity document.
Advantageously, but optionally, the first step 100 of the method may also include acquiring additional data including:
Identity data relating to the individual, such data being able for example to be confronted with data appearing on the identity document and allowing greater security of control (for example, last name, first name (s), date and place of birth), and / or
Data to discriminate the individual among a group of individuals crossing the same control. For example, in the case of a boarding for a flight, the data may include the flight number, the name of the airline, the landing and / or take-off airport, etc. Alternatively, in the case of a border crossing, it may be a visa number, a country of origin, etc. The acquisition step 140 is advantageously implemented before the step 130, and in this case during this step 130 the data making it possible to discriminate the individual are also recorded in connection with the number of the document and the biometric data acquired. on the individual.
The method then comprises a second step 200 implemented by the second control device 30. This step is implemented after step 100, for example a few minutes or a few hours later, or the next day or several days later.
During this second step 200, the individual presents himself to the second control device 30 and presents to the biometric data acquisition module 32 the same biometric trait as that from which the first biometric data item was acquired. A second biometric data is acquired on this trait during a step 210.
During a step 220, the second control device 30 retrieves from the memory 20, from this biometric data, the document number previously recorded for the same individual. To do this, the device searches the memory 20 for a biometric datum corresponding to the second biometric datum, that is to say that has been acquired on the same line, by comparing the second biometric datum with the biometric data recorded in the second datum. Memory. A match is established if a similarity rate between two biometric data exceeds a predetermined threshold, which depends on how the comparison is made and the nature of the biometric trait. A nonlimiting example of implementation of comparison between two data is by a distance calculation (Euclidean distance, Hamming distance, etc.) between the data.
The control device 30 then retrieves the document number corresponding to each of the biometric data having a level of correspondence with the second data greater than said threshold. The control device 30 can therefore recover one or more document numbers.
If several biometric data have been acquired on different biometrics at step 120, then either more than one biometric data is acquired on the same lines in step 210 and is used for step 220 of searching the document number of identity, which increases the security of the document, a single biometric data is acquired and used for step 220. The diversity of data acquired in step 120 allows in this case to increase the compatibility of the method with different devices of control 30.
In the case where, during step 100, additional data for discriminating the individual have been recorded in connection with the first biometric data item and the document number, step 200 may comprise an additional step 230 of acquisition of additional data, during which the individual re-enters the same data or data as in step 140. Advantageously, this input is not necessary if these additional data of the stage 140 are intrinsically and therefore previously known by the control device 30, for example because of its location if these data designate the airport in which the control device 30 is located.
This step 230 is implemented before step 220. In this case, the additional data is used to restrict all the biometric data of the memory to be compared with the second biometric data, by selecting only the biometric data recorded in the memory linked to the same additional data (for example, same flight number, same destination, etc.).
This accelerates the implementation of step 220 and reduces the number of document numbers obtained at the end of this step.
Then step 200 includes a step 240 during which the individual presents his document to the reader 36 of the second control device, and the control device 30 reads the contents of the document chip to retrieve the biometric authentication data. from the document number (s) it holds.
Since the reader 36 reads only the information stored in the chip contained in the document, and not those indicated in an automatic reading area, it is not necessary to present the document open or in a particular direction. In particular, the passport may be presented closed, for example by being placed on a dedicated support (not shown) of the second control device. This implies a considerable time saving for the individual, who does not need any particular manipulation of the identity document, or any other document whose reading zone or barcode should be read and removes the risks of failure related to this manipulation.
The reader accesses the biometric authentication data by using the document number as a password. In the case where he has recovered at the end of step 220 several numbers, the reader tries to open the chip by trying the numbers one after the other until trying the one that corresponds to the identity document of the individual and which allows access to the contents of the chip.
Then, step 200 includes a biometric authentication step 250 of the individual. This step includes comparing the authentication biometric data contained in the document chip with another biometric data acquired on the same trait. This other data item may be the second biometric data item that has been acquired to retrieve the document number from the memory, thereby simplifying step 250 which then does not include a biometric acquisition sub-step.
Alternatively, this other data may be a third biometric data acquired by the control device exclusively for the purpose of authentication. This is particularly the case if the biometric trait corresponding to the authentication data is different from that corresponding to the first and second data.
Depending on the result of the biometric authentication, access to the zone is allowed or denied for the individual.
Thus, the proposed method eliminates the manipulation of the identity document during the second step comprising the biometric authentication of the individual, without adding manipulation of an additional document, which simplifies and speeds up the crossing of this step.
