[0001] DIGITAL INSTRUMENT COMBINATION FOR A MOTOR VEHICLE DASHBOARD WITH A MODULAR DISPLAY SURFACE. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to digital instrument combinations for a motor vehicle dashboard. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION Traditionally composed of a plurality of analog needle dials associated with indicator lights, the instrument handsets are used to provide the driver with a wealth of data relating to the operation of a motor vehicle, such as for example, the instantaneous and average speeds, the engine speed, the number of kilometers traveled since the origin or over a certain period of time, the fuel level, or even the average consumption. They also make it possible to display warning signals (excessive engine temperature, insufficient oil level, door not properly closed, seat belt not fastened, etc.) and warning lights indicating the activation of certain devices of the vehicle ( turn signals, handbrake, position, passing or road lights). These instrument combinations, integrated into the dashboard of the vehicle, are usually arranged behind the steering wheel in the direct line of vision of the driver, so that the latter can see the information displayed without having to look away from the road. In recent years there have been the appearance of fully digital instrument handsets with an active matrix LCD display (LCD-TFT) in place of analogue needle dials. These new type of handsets, which offer a very good image quality in terms of resolution, contrast and brightness, are also configurable by the driver of the vehicle which can thus choose at least in part the modules he wants see on the screen as well as the display style (dials similar to analog dials or display in the form of graduations or figures reflecting the value of the relevant size) and the mood of the handset (sober with dark, or sporty lighting background with bright color background). These digital handsets can also control a number of vehicle functions (air conditioning, audio system, central locking, lighting, etc.) via controls located on the steering wheel or remote at the center console of the vehicle.
[0002] However, due to their limited surface area, these digital instrument handsets are not suitable for displaying the detailed road map of the vehicle navigation assistance system. This card is usually displayed on a remote screen 15 at the center console of the vehicle, which forces the driver of the vehicle to move his eyes laterally and momentarily leave the eyes of the road. OBJECT AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention therefore aims to overcome this disadvantage. It proposes for this purpose a instrument cluster for a motor vehicle dashboard comprising digital display means located behind the steering wheel and able to display for the driver a multitude of data relating to the driving of said vehicle; characterized in that said display means comprise two laterally movable digital display screens and a fixed digital display screen, said instrument cluster being adapted to adopt a first compact configuration in which said two movable screens are contiguous to each other. to one another by one of their lateral edges so as to conceal said fixed screen located behind, and a second extended configuration in which said movable screens are spaced laterally from each other so as to make visible said fixed screen for said driver. The instrument cluster according to the invention thus makes it possible to offer a display surface which can be modulated according to the data that the driver wishes to display. The compact configuration in which only two contiguous mobile screens are visible, will thus be particularly suitable for displaying information relating to the operation of the motor vehicle and that is usually found on the current digital instrument handsets, such as by example, the instantaneous and average speeds, the engine speed, the number of kilometers traveled, the remaining battery life, the average consumption, the cooling system set point temperature, the name of the radio station or track being listened to as well as any warning signals or warning lights. The extended configuration, in which the third fixed screen becomes visible, provides a complementary display surface allowing if necessary to view the road map of the navigation system of the vehicle. The combination of instruments according to the invention thus improves the ergonomics of driving and reduce the risk of accidents by avoiding the driver to look away from the axis of the road. On the other hand and the fact that all the necessary information to the driver can be displayed on the handset, the latter makes it possible to dispense with the screen at the center console of the vehicle. According to preferred features of the invention, taken alone or in combination: said fixed screen is centered on the median vertical plane of the steering wheel while said movable screens are identical and move laterally symmetrically with respect to said median vertical plane of the flying; in said compact configuration, said two movable screens extend in the same plane transverse to the axis of the vehicle, whereas in said extended configuration these are arranged slightly in V so as to give a curved appearance to the display ; in said extended configuration, the spacing between said two movable screens substantially corresponds to the width of said fixed screen in order to provide a certain visual continuity to said driver; each said mobile screen is carried by a corresponding support arm slidably mounted along a respective slideway inside said dashboard; Said instrument cluster comprises means for slidingly driving said support arms along said slides, said drive means comprising for each support arm a rack extending inside and along said corresponding and co-operating slideway; with a toothed gear rotatably mounted on said support arm; said support arms are hollow so as to house the electrical beams connecting the mobile screens to a continuous power source and / or to the display management device; said fixed screen is of transparent type so that said driver can visualize the road through it - the passage from said compact configuration to said extended configuration is done automatically when the driver activates the control system. aids navigation of said vehicle, said fixed screen then displaying the surrounding road map; And / or - stopping said navigation aid system or moving to the parking position of said vehicle causes the automatic return to said compact configuration. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS The description of the invention will now be continued by the detailed description of an exemplary embodiment, given below by way of illustration but without limitation, with reference to the appended drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the driver portion of the dashboard of a motor vehicle comprising a digital instrument cluster according to the invention, the latter being shown in its compact configuration; - Figure 2 shows a schematic top view of the dashboard of Figure 1 in which the instrument cluster according to the invention is also shown in its compact configuration; FIGS. 3 and 4 show respectively similar views to those of FIGS. 1 and 2 but in which the instrument cluster according to the invention is shown in its extended configuration; and FIG. 5 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional view of the dashboard of FIG. 1, in which the instrument cluster of the invention is shown in its compact configuration. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF SEVERAL EMBODIMENTS The conductive zone of the dashboard 1 shown in the figures comprises in its upper part a recess 2 supporting an instrument cluster 10 according to the invention, centered on the median vertical plane of the steering wheel 3 so as to face the eyes of the driver of the vehicle. As can be seen in FIGS. 2 and 4, the instrument cluster 10 comprises two mobile display screens 30, 40 as well as a fixed display screen 20 disposed behind these two movable screens 30, 40 (this fixed screen 20 being thus slightly further away from the driver's view of the vehicle than the other two 30, 40). These three screens are preferably based on the LCD ("Light Crystal Display") and matrix liquid crystal display technology. active TFT ("Thin film transistor" in English), this type of screen having the advantages of offering a very good image quality in terms of resolution, contrast and brightness. The fixed display screen 20 which here has a substantially square shape, is centered relative to the median vertical plane of the steering wheel 3 so as to be positioned perfectly in the line of vision of the driver of the vehicle (Figures 1 to 4). As illustrated in FIG. 5, this screen 20 is also rigidly connected to the board 1 by means of a fastening lug 21.
[0003] Rectangular, the two movable screens 30, 40 are identical and have dimensions greater than those of the central screen 20, in particular in terms of length and height. As illustrated in Figures 2, 4 and 5, each movable screen 30, 40, is carried by an arm 31, 41 having a J-shaped profile oriented horizontally. More specifically, each support arm 31, 41 comprises a main branch 41A, a second branch of shorter length T 41B, and a base 41C connecting these two branches together and extending perpendicular thereto (Figure 5) .
[0004] The end of the main branch 41A opposite the base 41C is rigidly connected to the upper part of the rear face of the corresponding movable screen 30, 40 overhanging the fixed screen 20, so as to prevent this main branch 41A of the support arm can not interfere with this fixed screen 20 during the lateral displacement of the mobile screen. The second T-branch 41B is slidably mounted in a respective curved slideway 32, 42 with a T-section formed inside the dashboard 1. As illustrated in FIGS. 2 and 4, these slideways 32, 42, are symmetrical with respect to the median vertical plane of the flywheel 3 and have a concavity oriented towards the flywheel 3. Preferably, the support arms 31, 41 are hollow so as to accommodate the electrical bundles connecting these screens 30, 40 to a a continuous power source such as the battery and / or intelligent service enclosure (BSI) managing the display. The instrument cluster 10 according to the invention also comprises means for slidingly driving the support arms 31, 41 of the screens 30, 40 along the curved rails 32, 42. The latter not shown in the figures but well known per se , for example comprise for each screen 30, 40, a rack extending inside and along the corresponding slideway 32, 42 and cooperating with a toothed gear rotatably mounted on the second T-branch 41B of the support arm 31, 41, the rotational drive of this pinion causing the sliding of the arm 31, 41 and the screen 30, 40 along the slide 32, 42. The sliding drive means are actuated via electric motors concealed at the interior of the dashboard 1 and driven by the intelligent servitude case of the vehicle, so that the movable screens 30, 40 move laterally symmetrically with respect to the median vertical plane of the steering wheel 3 This displacement of the movable screens thus allows the instrument cluster 1 according to the invention to be able to adopt two configurations offering different display surfaces. In a first so-called compact configuration and illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2, the two movable screens 30, 40 which then extend in the same plane transverse to the axis of the vehicle, are joined to each other by two their lateral edges and along the vertical vertical plane of the steering wheel 3, so as to hide the fixed screen 20 located just behind. In the second so-called extended configuration illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4, the two movable screens 30, 40 are laterally spaced from each other so as to make visible the fixed screen 20 for the driver of the vehicle, the latter being further arranged slightly V-shaped so as to give a curved appearance to the display. Advantageously in this configuration, the spacing between the two movable screens 30, 40 substantially corresponds to the width of the fixed screen 20 to provide a certain visual continuity to the driver. We will now describe a preferred mode of operation of the instrument cluster 1 according to the invention.
[0005] When stopped and in the parking position of the vehicle, the instrument cluster 10 adopts its compact configuration and the three screens 20, 30 and 40 are off. As soon as the position "+ After contact" (+ APC) or one of the following positions of the Neiman is engaged (which means that the ignition key is locked in the Neiman), the two movable screens 30, 40 light up and display a certain number of usual information relating to the operation of the motor vehicle, such as for example: the instantaneous and average speeds, the engine speed, the number of kilometers traveled, the remaining range, the average consumption, the set temperature the air conditioning system, the name of the radio station or track being listened to, as well as any warning signals or warning lights (Figure 1). Of course, the type of information displayed on the mobile screens, their layout, the background and the display style of this information (dials with needles similar to analog dials or digital type display with numbers translating the value of the quantity concerned) may vary, these elements not being of direct relevance to the invention. When the driver of the vehicle launches, via for example a control wheel located at the center console of the vehicle, the satellite navigation aid system, the fixed screen 20 lights and the movable screens 30, 40 move laterally and symmetrically so that the instrument cluster 1 comes to occupy its extended configuration. The fixed screen 20, now visible, then displays the surrounding road map as shown in Figure 3. This screen 20 is also likely to display the visual messages indicating the path to take to reach a given destination chosen by this driver . These visual messages requiring a limited total display area, can also alternatively appear on one or the other of the movable screens 30, 40. Stopping the navigation aid system or the passage in position Parking of the vehicle automatically shuts down the fixed screen 20 and the return of the instrument cluster 10 to its compact configuration. The transition to parking position also causes the extinction of the two movable screens 30, 40. According to non-represented embodiments of the instrument cluster according to the invention, the shape and / or dimensions of the fixed and mobile display screens are different. According to other embodiments not shown, the profile rails and rectilinear and / or movable screens are pivotally mounted on the support arms. According to still other embodiments not shown: - the fixed screen is of transparent type so that the driver can view the road through it; the means for slidingly driving the moving screens along the slideways are different; - The articulation mechanism of the movable screens is also different and / or it is completely hidden under the dashboard of the vehicle; - The fixed and mobile screens are covered with a polarizing anti-reflective filter; and / or - the instrument cluster includes a sun visor overhanging the fixed and mobile screens. Of course, the present invention is not limited to the embodiments described and shown, but encompasses all the alternative embodiments within the reach of the skilled person.
