DETAILED DESCRIPTION The following description is given by way of example only and is not intended to limit the present description or its uses. Certain terms are used throughout the specification and claims that follow to refer to particular system components and configurations. That is, even, 1; e- understands = a specialist. Some companies may refer to a component with different names. This document does not intend to distinguish between components that differ by name but not by function. In the following description and in the claims, the terms "including" and "comprising" are used in an open manner and thus should be interpreted to mean "including, but not limited to". Examples of the invention are described below. It should be understood that these examples and other examples or embodiments are given by way of example and are intended to be illustrative of the invention rather than limiting it. Although the invention can be applied very broadly to different types of systems, it is impossible to include all possible embodiments and contexts of the invention in this description. By reading the description, many alternative embodiments of the present invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Other embodiments may be used and other modifications may be made, without departing from the spirit or scope of protection of the object of the invention as here presented.
[0004] Referring to Figure 1, a vehicle dashboard 10 is shown and includes an instrument panel 12 which has an assembly 16 forming a main dial and other accessory dials 14. The exemplary dial assembly 16 includes a pointer assembly 18 which rotates relative to an axis A to indicate on a defined scale a value which is an indication of operating parameters of the current vehicle. Referring to Fig. 2, with reference to Fig. 1, in this example, the dial assembly 16 includes a dial surface 20 having a scale which is an indication of a vehicle operating parameter. . The dial surface as an example is curved upward to provide a desired dimensional effect. The pointer assembly 18 is supported relative to the axis of rotation A on the near side of the dial surface.
[0005] In this example, the pointer assembly 18 includes a pointer 22 which is supported on a shaft 24 of a stepping motor 26. The stepping motor 26 is in turn supported on a printed circuit board 28 supported within a housing 30 of the dial assembly 16. The shaft 24 driven by the stepping motor 26 allows the propagation of light from a source 32 of light along the axis A in the pointer 22. The shaft 24 can be transparent or translucent to allow the propagation of light in the pointer 22. The shaft 24 may also include a cylindrical opening or cylindrical bore which allows the propagation of light along the axis A. The pointer 22 has a curved or curved shape which follows and corresponds at the dial surface 20. The curved dial surface 20 has difficulty in providing substantially uniform illumination of the pointer assembly 18. Therefore, the exemplary pointer 22 has features for illumination from a base portion 34 supported along the axis A to the tip portion 36. The pointer 22 given by way of example comprises the base portion 34 which comprises a hollow shaft 41 received on the shaft 24 of the motor 26 stepwise. The shaft 24 in this example is a transparent tree and allows the propagation of light from the source 32 of light. The light source 32 is supported on the printed circuit board 28 and emits light through the shaft 24 and into the pointer 22 along the axis A. The pointer assembly 18 includes a cap 40 which is disposed on the pointer 22 along the axis A to prevent bright spots from being visible to an operator of the vehicle. The pointer 22 has an arm 52 extending radially outwardly from the base portion 34 to the tip 36. The arm 52 has a curvature 38 after which the arm 52 extends radially not only radially outside but also upwards at an angle corresponding to the dial surface. The arm 52 has an initial portion 44 extending radially outwardly from axis A to curvature 38. An outward portion 46 extends from curvature 38 toward tip 36 The outward portion 46 extends at an upward angle corresponding to an angle of the dial surface. The light passing through the axis of rotation A and provided by the light source 32 is redirected from the axis A towards the tip 36 of the pointer 22 by a reflecting surface 53. To maintain a substantially uniform illumination of the pointer 22, it is desired to reflect or propagate light from the side surfaces 48 of the pointer 22 rather than from the top and bottom surfaces. Referring to Fig. 3 with a reference which continues in Fig. 2, an exemplary pointer 22 has a reflective surface 53 disposed along the axis A forming part of the base portion 34. . In this example, the reflection surface 53 has a plurality of ribs 54 which direct the light transversely relative to the axis A against the side walls 48 of the pointer 22. The base 34 has pin bosses 56 for receiving pins from the cap. 40 disposed above the reflective surface 53 to prevent bright spots from being visible by an operator of the vehicle. Referring to FIG. 4, with a reference which continues in FIG. 2, another exemplary pointer assembly 58 includes a reflective surface 62 defining a conical surface disposed along the axis A. The conically shaped reflector surface 62 directs the light transversely to the axis A and against the side walls 48 of the pointer 22 'of the pointer assembly 58. The exemplary pointer 22 'further includes a coating 60 on at least the upper surface of the outwardly facing portion 46. The coating 60 may be applied to allow a color change of the illuminated pointer 22 '.
[0006] Referring to Fig. 5 with a reference which continues in Fig. 2, another exemplary pointer 64 is shown and includes a reflection surface 66 which has two flat surfaces 68 which are aligned on the axis A. The flat surfaces 68 are inclined relative to the axis A and relatively to each other. The flat surfaces 68 propagate the transmitted light along the axis A against the side walls 48 to allow the desired uniform illumination at the pointer 64 from the base 34 to the tip portion 36. Therefore, the exemplary light reflecting surfaces of the pointer arms provide substantially uniform illumination from the pointer arm regardless of a rotational position with respect to the axis in which the pointer could be. Although an exemplary embodiment has been described, one skilled in the art will understand that certain modifications are apparent from the present disclosure. For this reason, the following claims must be taken into account in determining the scope of protection and the content of the present application.
