TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] The present invention relates to a dispenser apparatus for dispensing a liquid, the dispenser apparatus being a hybrid providing the ability to alternatively dispense soap or other liquid from the container by an electric motor or manually. EXPOSURE OF THE INVENTION
[002] The present invention relates to a dispenser apparatus for dispensing liquid soap, a lotion or other liquid.
[003] The dispenser apparatus includes a cabinet that defines an interior for maintaining a container containing a liquid or a dispensing valve structure connected to the container for dispensing liquid from the container.
[004] The valve actuator mechanism is connected to the cabinet for operating the dispensing valve structure for dispensing a liquid from the container, when the container and the dispensing valve structure are kept inside.
[005] The dispensing apparatus includes an electric motor and a manually operable member, mounted movably in relation to said cabinet. The electric motor and the manually operable member are selectively alternatively cooperable with the valve actuator mechanism to cause the valve actuator mechanism to operate the dispensing valve structure and dispense liquid from the container.
[006] Other features, advantages and objectives of the present invention will become apparent with reference to the following description and associated drawings. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[007] Figure 1 is a front perspective view of the dispenser apparatus cabinet;
[008] Figure 2 is a front perspective view illustrating the cover removed from the cabinet and a container containing liquid soap and a dispensing valve structure connected thereto in an operative position in relation to the non-covered portion of the cabinet and the structure related;
[009] Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but illustrating the container and the connected dispensing valve structure removed;
[0010] Figure 4 is a side elevation view illustrating a container portion and a dispensing valve structure connected in operative association with a valve actuator mechanism and other structural components of the dispensing apparatus, prior to operation of the valve structure dispensing device for dispensing liquid soap from the container;
[0011] Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4, but illustrating the beginning of the dispensing of liquid soap by the valve actuator mechanism operated by an electric motor;
[0012] Figure 6 is a view similar to Figure 3, but illustrating the condition of the illustrated structure immediately before an operation of the dispensing valve structure has been caused by the engine; and
[0013] Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 2, but illustrating the dispensing valve structure being operated by a manually operable member rather than by an electric motor. BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
[0014] Referring now to the drawings, reference number 10 is employed to identify the cabinet of a dispenser apparatus constructed in accordance with the teachings of the present invention. The dispensing apparatus is for dispensing liquid soap, although it can be used for dispensing other liquids such as lotion.
[0015] Cabinet 10 includes a removable cover 12, the cover having been removed from the rest of the cabinet in figures 2 and 3.
[0016] The cabinet defines an interior for maintenance of a container 14 containing liquid soap and the dispensing valve structure 16 of any suitable known type connected to the container for dispensing liquid from the container. The dispensing apparatus suitably includes a locking structure to allow only specific combinations of containers and dispensing valve structure to be used. In this case, for example, the external configurations of the container and the dispensing valve structure match the shapes of the recesses of the apparatus containing them. Electronic locks and/or other types of mechanical locks can be used in the system, as well as other specific refills can be used in the system.
[0017] The dispensing apparatus includes a valve actuator mechanism connected to the cabinet for operating the dispensing valve structure for dispensing a liquid from the container when the container and the dispensing valve structure are installed in the container.
[0018] The valve actuator mechanism includes a rotating member 20 rotatable by an electric motor 22 when the electric motor is energized. An arrow in figures 4 through 6 indicates the direction of rotation of the rotating member 20 during consecutive stages of operation.
[0019] A manually operable member in the form of a pivotally mounted push lever 24 is accessible from an external location of the cabinet. The electric motor 22 and pivotally mounted push lever 24 are alternatively selectively cooperable with the valve actuator mechanism to cause the valve actuator mechanism to operate the dispensing valve structure and deliver a liquid from the container.
[0020] An elongated actuator member 30 mounted pivotally relative to the cabinet is incorporated into the valve actuator mechanism. The actuating member is alternatively selectively engageable by the pivotally mounted manually operable push lever and the rotating member 20 for pivoting the actuating member and causing operation of the dispensing valve structure and dispensing of liquid from the container by dispensing valve structure. A suitable interconnection exists between the actuator member and the dispensing valve structure.
[0021] The actuator member 30 has a first cam surface 32 engageable by the pivotally mounted push lever, as shown in Figure 7, a pressure applied to the actuator member by the pivotally mounted push lever pivoting the actuator member and making cause the dispensing valve structure 16 to operate.
[0022] The actuator member 30 has a second cam surface 34 spaced apart from the first cam surface engageable by the rotating member 20 upon energizing the electric motor 22. The actuator member responds to pressure applied to it by the rotating member 20 at the second cam surface 34 for pivoting the actuator member and operating the dispensing valve structure. Figures 4 and 5 illustrate this action. The pivoting member 20 has a projection 36 slidably engageable with the second cam surface during a rotation of the pivoting member. Figure 4 shows the position of the projection 36 during a start of rotation of the rotating member 20 by the motor 22. Figure 5 shows the projection 36 engaging with the cam surface 34 for pivoting the actuating member. And Figure 6 illustrates the position of the projection 36 just before it is disengaged from the second cam surface during continued rotation of the rotating member by the motor 22. The rotating member 20 will cease rotation when the projection again reaches the position shown in Figure 4, through the use of any suitable switch or other control associated with the motor.
[0023] The hybrid operation of the dispenser has several advantages. There is less reliance on batteries, and fewer problems concerning infrared and soap system maintenance related issues. The hybrid function ensures that customers always have soap, resulting in fewer complaints and less related frustration discounted at dispensers (vandalism). For the end user, when the soap is in the container, there will always be access to the soap, whether during an electrically driven (automatic) operation or a manual operation.
[0024] The dispensing apparatus includes indicators, such as indicators generally designated by reference numeral 40, for advice on certain conditions, such as the apparatus being in condition for non-manual operation by the electric motor. A battery replacement or other suitable action can be taken by maintenance personnel in a timely manner.
[0025] Another important aspect of the dispensing apparatus is the inclusion of a counter means for counting the total number of times liquid is dispensed from the container, due to an operation by the valve actuator mechanism by the electric motor or by the member manually operable. Appropriate indicators, such as indicator 42, can be used to provide an indication of the count.
[0026] Counter structure 50 including a switch is employed, which counts uses regardless of whether the system operates in manual or automatic (electric) mode to ensure that the count of a refill is accurately reflected. In the arrangement shown, the downwardly extending switch element 52 of the counter frame switch 50 retracts to close the switch when engaged by an upwardly movable actuator member 30. The counter frame could be located at other locations and be of any suitable type.
[0027] The system can be used with an assortment of pumps/valves (refills). A switch can be employed on the dispensing apparatus which will automatically recognize new refills.
[0028] The power source (batteries) will be managed and possibly a small power device (hearing aid battery and/or power collection CPU) can be added to a PCB that will allow the system to provide indicators (low refill , battery dead indicator) and refill count after the (alkaline) battery core set is no longer able to pump the refill.

Claims (12)
[0001]
1. Dispensing apparatus for dispensing liquid soap, lotion or other liquid, said dispensing apparatus including, in combination: a cabinet (10) defining an interior for maintaining a container (14) containing liquid and a dispensing valve structure (16) connected to said container (14) for dispensing liquid from said container (14); a valve actuator mechanism connected to said cabinet (10), said valve actuator mechanism comprising an actuator member (30) for operating said dispensing valve structure (16) for dispensing a liquid from the container ( 14), when said container (14) and dispensing valve structure (16) are maintained in said interior; an electric motor (22); and a manually operable member (24) movably mounted relative to said cabinet (10), said electric motor (22) and said manually operable member (24) selectively alternatively cooperable with said actuator member (30 ) of said valve actuator mechanism to cause said valve actuator mechanism to operate said dispensing valve structure (16) and dispense liquid from said container (14), characterized in that: said container (14 ) is positioned above the dispensing valve structure (16) within the interior of the cabinet (10); and said actuator member (30) is configured to operate said dispensing valve structure (16) in a vertical direction to dispense liquid from the container (14).

Dispensing apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that said valve actuator mechanism further comprises a rotation member (20) rotatable by said electric motor (22) when said electric motor (22) is energized , said actuator member (30) selectively alternatively engageable by said manually operable member (24) and said rotating member (20) for pivoting said actuator member (30) and causing operation of said dispensing valve structure (16) and dispensing a liquid from said container (14) by said dispensing valve structure (16).

3. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 2, characterized in that said manually operable member (24) is pivotally mounted in said cabinet (10) and accessible from an external location of said cabinet (10).

Dispensing apparatus according to claim 3, characterized in that said actuator member (30) has a first cam surface (32) engageable by said manually operable member (24) and responsive to a pressure applied to the said actuator member (30) by said manually operable member (24) on said first cam surface (32) for pivoting said actuator member (30) and operating said dispensing valve structure (16).

Dispensing apparatus according to claim 4, characterized in that said actuator member (30) has a second cam surface (34) spaced apart from said first cam surface (32) engageable by said rotation member ( 20) and responsive to a pressure applied to said actuator member (30) by said rotating member (20) on said second cam surface (34) for pivoting said actuator member (30) and operating said valve structure. dispensation (16).

6. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 5, characterized in that said rotating member (20) includes a projection (36) slidably engageable with said second cam surface (34) during a rotation of said rotating member (20).

7. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that it additionally includes visual indicators (42) to indicate when said dispensing apparatus is in condition for non-manual operation by said electric motor (22).

Dispensing apparatus according to claim 2, characterized in that it additionally includes a counter means for counting the total number of times a liquid is dispensed from said container (14) due to the operation of said member actuator (30) by said electric motor (22) or by said manually operable member (24).

9. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that it additionally includes a locking structure that allows only specific combinations of container (14) and dispensing valve structure (16) to be used.

10. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 8, characterized in that the counter means includes a switch operatively associated with said actuator member (30).

11. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 10, characterized in that said switch includes a switching element engageable with said actuator member (30).

12. Dispensing apparatus according to claim 1, characterized in that said valve actuator mechanism further comprises a rotation member (20) rotatable by said electric motor (22) about a horizontal axis and configured to engage the said actuator member (30) of said valve actuator mechanism.
