FUNDAMENTALS OF THE INVENTION
[0001] The present invention is generally related to packaging for packaging beverage containers or other types of articles. More specifically, the present invention is related to packages that have an article protection functionality and/or other features that protect the containers or articles against breakage. DISCLOSURE SUMMARY
[0002] In general, an aspect of the disclosure is directed to a package designed to accommodate a plurality of articles. The carton comprises a plurality of panels extending at least partially around an interior of the packaging carton and a plurality of end flaps respectively in pivotable connection with respective panels of the plurality of panels. The plurality of end flaps are at least partially mutually overlapping to thereby at least partially form a closed end of the packaging package. The carton may also comprise at least one end flap of the plurality of end flaps for engaging at least one item of the plurality of items. The at least one article protection flap extends at least partially from the closed end into the carton.
[0003] In another aspect, the disclosure is generally directed to a blanket to form a package designed to accommodate a plurality of containers. The blanket comprises a plurality of panels extending at least partially around an interior of the packaging package formed from the blanket and a plurality of end flaps respectively in pivotable connection with respective panels of the plurality of panels. The plurality of end flaps are mutually at least partially overlapping to thereby at least partially form a closed end of the package formed from the blanket. The blanket may also comprise at least one article protection tab in pivotable connection with at least one end tab of the plurality of end tabs for engaging at least one article of the plurality of articles. The at least one article protection flap is to be positioned to extend from the closed end of the package formed from the blanket at least partially into the package formed from the blanket.
[0004] In another aspect, the disclosure is generally directed to a method of forming a package to accommodate a plurality of articles. The method comprises obtaining a blanket comprising a plurality of panels, a plurality of end flaps respectively in pivotable connection with respective panels of the plurality of panels, and at least one article protection flap in pivotable connection with at least one end flap of the plurality of end flaps for engaging at least one article of the plurality of articles. The method may also comprise forming an interior of the carton defined at least partially by a plurality of panels. Forming the interior of the packaging package may comprise forming an open-ended sleeve. The method may further comprise at least partially closing one of the ends of the carton by mutually at least partially overlapping the plurality of end flaps, and positioning the at least one article protection flap to extend at least partially from the closed end towards the interior. of the packaging.

[00015] The present invention relates generally to packages that contain items such as containers, bottles, cans, etc. The articles can be used, for example, for the packaging of food and beverage products. Articles can be made from materials of compositions suitable for packaging the particular food or beverage item, and the materials include; but not limited to, glass; aluminum and/or other metals; plastics such as PET, LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PS, PVC, EVOH and nylon; and the like, or any combination thereof.
[00016] The packages according to the present invention can accommodate articles of any configuration. For purposes of illustration and not for the purpose of limiting the scope of the invention, the detailed description presented below describes beverage containers (e.g. glass beverage bottles) as arranged within the packaging embodiments. In this specification, the terms "bottom", "bottom", "top" and "top" indicate certain guidelines with respect to fully assembled and upright packages.
[00017] Figure 1 is a plan view of the outside of a blanket 1, generally indicated at 3, used to form a package 5 (Figures 6 and 7) according to a representative embodiment of the disclosure. The package 5 can be used to house a plurality of articles such as containers C (Figure 4). In one embodiment, the containers are bottles with a wider bottom and a narrow top or neck T including a CP cap. In the illustrated embodiment, package 5 is sized to accommodate twelve containers C in a single layer in a 3x4 arrangement, but it should be understood that package 5 may be sized and configured to accommodate containers of an equal or different quantity in more than one layer and /or in different row/column arrangements (eg 1x6, 2x6, 4x6, 3x8, 2x6x2, 3x4x2,2x9, 3x6, etc.), or just a single article. In the illustrated embodiment, the package 5 includes a first end 7 and a second end 9, each with a respective handle, generally indicated at 10 (Figures 5 to 7) for holding and carrying the package, at each end 7, 9. Package 5 may have only a single handle 10 at any of the ends 7, 9, without departing from the disclosure. As will be discussed in more detail below, the straps 10 are formed from various features on blanket 3.
[00018] In one embodiment, each of the first end 7 and the second end 9 of the package 5 has article protection features 11 (Figures 5 and 6) to protect at least one article of C of the plurality of articles. The package 5 of the first embodiment may have article protection flap 13 to protect the at least one article. The article protection features 11 cushion the ends 7, 9 of the wrapping package and prevent or reduce the risk of breakage of the containers C. In one embodiment, the article protection flaps 13 are movable between a first position (Figure 1) and a second position (Figure 7), positioned between adjacent containers C in the package in order to reduce the movement of the containers within the package and to prevent the containers from breaking. Article protection features and tabs can be similar to; or the same as those described in U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 13/419,740, filed March 14, 2012, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference for all purposes as if set forth herein in its entirety. The article protection features 11 and/or the article protection tabs 13 may be otherwise shaped, arranged and/or configured without departing from the disclosure. In addition, article protection features 11 and/or article protection tabs 13 can be omitted without departing from the disclosure.
[00019] Blanket 3 has a longitudinal axis L1 and a lateral axis L2. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the frame includes a bottom panel 15 in pivotable connection to a first side panel 17 at the side fold line 19. A second side panel 21 is in pivotable connection to the bottom panel 15 at a side fold line 23 A top panel 25 is in pivotable connection with the first side panel 17 at the side fold line 27, and a securing tab 29 is in pivotable connection with the top panel 25 at a side fold line 31. Any of the panels top and bottom 25, 15, first and second side panels 17, 21, and securing tab 29 may be otherwise shaped, arranged, shaped or omitted without departing from the disclosure. [00020] The bottom panel 15 is in pivotable connection to a first lower end flap 33 and a second lower end flap 35. The first side panel 17 is in pivotable connection to a first side end flap 37 and a second side end flap 39 The second side panel 21 is in pivotable connection to a first side end flap 43 and a second side end flap 45. The first top panel 25 is in pivotable connection to a first upper end flap 47 and a second end flap top 49. In one embodiment, when the carton 5 is assembled, end flaps 33, 37, 43, 47 close the first end 7 of the carton, and the end flaps 35, 39, 45, 49 close the second end 9 of the carton. According to an alternative embodiment of the present disclosure, different arrangements of flaps can be used to close the ends 7, 9 of the package 5.
[00021] The end flaps 33, 37, 43, 47 51 extend along a first marginal area of the blanket 3, and are in pivotally connected connection to a first longitudinal fold line 61 extending along the length of the blanket. The end flaps 35, 39, 45, 49 extend along a second marginal area of the package-forming blanket 3, and are in pivotable connection with a second longitudinal fold line 63 which also extends along the length of the blanket. The longitudinal fold lines 61, 63 can be, for example, substantially straight, or offset at one or more locations to contribute to blanket thickness or other factors. The ends of the package 5 can be otherwise moulded, arranged and/or shaped (for example, at least partially tapered), without departing from the disclosure.
[00022] In the embodiment according to Figure 1, blanket 3 has loop features to form loops 10. Loop features may include loop flaps 73 in pivotable connection with a respective upper end flap 47, 49 in a line of arcuate fold 75 and separable from the respective upper end flap 47, 49 along cut lines 74. In one embodiment, additional fold lines 76 may extend on each of the outer loop flaps 73. The loop flaps 73 may be omitted or may be omitted. be modeled, arranged and/or configured in other ways without straying from the disclosure.

[00024] In one embodiment, the blanket 3 has features to form the article protection features 11 of the packaging package 5. As shown in Figure 1, the side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45 and the upper end flaps 47, 49 exhibit deformations in the form of indentations 81 on the external surface of the blanket 3 such that the indentations form a bulge on the internal surface of the blanket. The lower end flaps 33, 35 each have two rows of deformations in the form of indentations 83 on the inner surface of the packaging forming blanket 3 such that the indentations in the inner surface form a protrusion on the outer surface 1 of the packaging forming blanket 3 As shown in Figure 1, the upper end flaps 47, 49 each have corner notches 85. The indentations 81, 83 can be any deformation in a surface of a respective one of the side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45, end flaps uppers 47, 49, or lower tails 33, 35 such that the deformation may be of any suitable shape (e.g. a concave depression or overhang, convex depression or overhang, flat depression or overhang, raised area, embossing area, etc. , or in any other suitable way). In addition, indentations 81, 83 may be formed on the inner or outer surface of one or more of first side panel 17, second side panel 21, top panel 25, bottom panel 15 without departing from the disclosure.
[00025] In the first embodiment, blanket 3 includes nine article protection flaps 13 arranged in a 3x3 arrangement, but the blanket may have more or less than nine article protection flaps, and the flaps could be otherwise arranged in other suitable row/column arrangements or in a random configuration in the back panel 15, including a single row or single column configuration, or any other suitable configuration. In other embodiments, blanket 3 may include article protection tabs that are different, similar, or identical to other article protection tabs without departing from the disclosure. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the middle row of article protection tabs 13 is oriented 180 degrees relative to a row of article protection tabs closest to the respective longitudinal fold lines 61, 63. In other embodiments, the Article protection flaps 13 could be otherwise shaped, arranged and/or configured without departing from the disclosure.
[00026] As shown in Figure 1, each of the article protection flaps 13 is in pivotable connection to the bottom panel 15 at a respective lateral fold line 91 and are each defined at least partially by a cut 93 in the bottom panel . Alternatively, the cut 93 may comprise other forms of brittleness (e.g. a tear line comprising cut lines separated by frangible incisions, a tear line which is formed by a series of spaced apart cuts, etc.) that allow the article protection flap 13 is separated from bottom panel 15 without departing from the disclosure. [00027] In the illustrated embodiment, an article protection flap or corner flap 101 may be in pivotable connection with each of the side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45. The corner flaps 101 can help secure the containers C inside package 5 and/or help create cushioning for containers C, and/or help strengthen corners 99 of the package. Each of the corner flaps 101 may be in pivotable connection to the respective side end flap along a longitudinal fold line 103 and separable from the respective side end flap along a cut line 105, which may extend from a tip of the longitudinal fold line 103 to a free side edge 106 of the respective side end flap. Each of the corner flaps 101 may include intermediate fold lines 107 extending from the cut line 105 to a free side edge 109 of the respective corner flap 101. In one embodiment, the intermediate fold line may be of generally arcuate shape, such as shown in Figure 1. Therefore, each of the corner flaps 101 can be bent and generally positioned close to or adjacent to a respective corner 99 of the package 5 (Figure 5) to at least partially conform to the configuration of the C containers adjacent to corners and help reduce the freedom of movement of containers located in corners. Corner flaps 101 can be shaped, arranged and/or otherwise configured without departing from the disclosure. In addition, the package may have different amounts of corners 99 than corner flaps 101.
[00028] As shown in Figure 1, blanket 3 includes dispensing features for forming a dispenser 143 in package 5 (Figure 6). As shown in Figure 1, the dispenser features include two dispenser panels 147 which are separable from the remainder of the first top panel 25 along tear lines 149 and are in pivotable connection to the first top panel 25 along a respective line. of longitudinal folding151. Dispenser panels 147 are mutually separable along a longitudinal tear line or cut line 153. In the embodiment, a respective longitudinal edge 111 of the corner flaps 101 may overlap and/or extend adjacent and/or across. contact with a respectively adjacent side panel 17, 21. In the embodiment, at least a portion of each corner flap 101 between the longitudinal fold line 103 and the intermediate fold line 107 can be glued to the respective side end flap 37, 39, 43, 45. Alternatively, or additionally, the corner flaps 101 can be glued to the respective side panels 17, 21, or the glue can be omitted from the corner flaps such that they are free to hinge and/or de slide relative to the side end flaps and/or side panels.
[00030] In a representative embodiment, the package 5 can be further assembled by folding the blanket along the transverse folding lines 19, 23, 27, 31 to glue the fastening tab 29 in face-to-face contact with the inner surface of the second side panel 21, and to form an open ended sleeve 131 with an interior 133 (Figure 3). As shown in Figure 4, containers C can be loaded into the interior 133 of the open-ended sleeve 131 before or after closing one of the ends 7, 9. In the illustrated embodiment, when containers C adjacent to the first end 7 are loaded into the inside 133, the side end flaps 37, 43 may be partially closed, so that the longitudinal edges 111 of the corner flaps 101 are positioned between the containers C at the corners of the carton and the respective side panels 17, 21. In one embodiment, the edges 111 and adjacent corner flap portions 101 of edges 111 may contact respective corner containers C and/or respective side panels 17, 21, generally lying between a container and a side panel. Corner flaps 101 at second end 9 can be similarly disposed between respective containers C and side panels 17, 21. Blanket 3 can be otherwise transformed into open-ended sleeve using alternative folding and gluing steps, without moving away the scope of this disclosure. Furthermore, containers C may be loaded in other shapes into the interior 133 of the open-ended sleeve 131 without departing from the context of this disclosure.
[00031] In the illustrated embodiment, the side end flaps 37, 43 are folded inward along the longitudinal fold line 61 to at least partially close the first end 7. As the side end flaps 37, 43 are folded, the end flaps corner 101 slide against respective side panels 17, 21 and curve along respective intermediate fold lines 107 to curve around corners 99 of package 5 and waistband containers C adjacent the corners. In addition, the corner flaps 101 can generally curve to conform to the curvature of the respectively adjacent containers. The upper end flap 47 is folded along the longitudinal fold line 61 such that the upper end flap 47 overlaps the side end flaps 37, 43 and the lug flap 73dic generally in alignment with the openings 77. In one embodiment, the flap The upper end flange 47 can be glued in face-to-face contact with the side end flaps 37, 43. The lower end flap 33 is folded up along the longitudinal fold line 61 into face-to-face contact with the lower portions of the side end flaps 37 , 43. In one embodiment, the lower end flap 33 overlaps a portion of the outer upper end flap 47 (Figure 6). The lower end flap 33 can be glued to the side end flaps 37, 43 and/or the upper end flap 47. Therefore, the loop 10 (Figures 5 and 6) at the first end 7 is formed by aligning the loop flap 73 of the end flap. top 47 and the openings 77 of the side end flaps 37,43. The upper end flap 47, the side end flaps 37,43, and the lower end flap 33 can be selectively glued together to close the first end 7 of the package 5 (Figures 5 and 6).
[00032] In one embodiment, the second end 9 of the package 5 can be closed in a similar manner to that of the first end 7 by folding, respectively overlapping, and selectively gluing, the side end flaps 39, 45, upper end flaps 49, 53, and the lower end flap35. The assembled packaging carton is shown in Figure 6. As shown in Figures 5 and 6, when the side end flaps 37, 43, 39, 45 are folded over their respective ends 7, 9, the portions of the longitudinal folding lines 61, 63 that connect the side end flaps 37, 43, 39, 45 to respective side panels 17,21, form and/or extend along a respective corner 99 of the carton. One or both ends 7, 9 can be deformed, arranged, shaped in other ways or omitted, without departing from the disclosure. Furthermore, the open ended sleeve 131 can be loaded with the containers and closed in other ways without departing from the disclosure. For example, ends 7, 9 can be closed in any order, and containers can be loaded before or after closing one or both ends 7, 9. In addition, corner flaps 101 can be folded along fold lines longitudinals 103 and/or glued before or after any step of packaging formation 5.
[00033] In the representative embodiment, Figure 5 shows the first end 7 of the package 5 viewed from the inside 133 of the packaging package with containers C omitted for clarity. As shown in Figure 5, the corner flaps 101 extend into the corners 99 of the carton 5, with the longitudinal edges 111 of the corner flaps extending adjacent and/or in contact with the respective side panels 17, 21. The corner flaps 101 can help protect items within the package by forming a cushion for containers C and/or reducing the space within the packaging package 133 to prevent movement of containers C within the package. Therefore, the corner flaps 101 can press the containers C adjacent to the corners 99 of the packaging package against the other containers C contained in the package and reduce the freedom of movement of the containers contained therein. In one embodiment, the carton may have a different amount of corners 99 than corner flaps 101. For example, two of the corner flaps 101 can be omitted so that only two corner flaps 101 are disposed at opposite corners 99 of the carton of packaging. Corner flaps 101 and/or corners 99 can be otherwise shaped, arranged and/or shaped, without departing from the disclosure.
[00034] In the illustrated embodiment, the corner flaps 101 cooperate with the item protection flaps 13 and the item prediction features 11 to help reduce breakage of the containers C. For example, the item protection features 111 may provide additional cushioning for containers C at ends 7, 9 of the package. The article protection tabs 13 can be pressed into the interior 133 of the wrapping package 5 from the bottom panel 15, as shown in Figure 7. Thus, each of the article protection tabs 13 can be pushed up between two respective containers C to further reduce the freedom of movement of containers C.
[00035] The blankets according to the present invention can be, for example, formed from coated carton materials and similar materials. For example, the inner and/or outer sides of blankets can be coated with a clay based coating. The clay-based coating can then be printed with product advertising, price coding and other information or images. The blankets can then be coated with a varnish to protect any information printed on the blankets. The blankets can also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer on either or both sides of the blankets.
[00036] According to the representative modalities, blankets can be constructed of cardboard material with a thickness such that it is heavier and more rigid than common paper. Blankets can also be constructed of other materials; such as cardboard, stiff paper, or any other material that exhibits adequate properties to allow the carton pack to function at least generally as described above. Blankets can also be laminated or overlaid with one or more film-like materials on selected panels or panel sections.
[00037] According to the above-described embodiments of the present disclosure, a fold line can be any substantially linear, although not necessarily straight, line of weakness that facilitates folding along it. More specifically, but not for the purpose of narrowing the scope of the present disclosure, fold lines include: a crease line, such as lines formed with a blunt crease knife, or the like, that creates a crushed portion of the material along the desired line of fragility; a cut that extends partially in and/or completely through the material along the desired line of weakness; and various combinations of these characteristics.
[00038] As an example, a tear line may include: a slit that extends partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of spaced slits that extend partially inward and/or completely through the material along the desired line of brittleness, or various combinations of these characteristics. As a more specific example, one type of tear line is in the form of a series of spaced slits that extend completely through the material, with adjacent slits being slightly spaced apart, such that an incision (eg, a small piece of material) forming something like a bridge) is defined between adjacent slits to typically temporarily connect the material along the entire length of the tear line. The incisions are broken during tearing along the tear line. The incisions typically constitute a relatively small percentage of the tear line, and alternatively, the incisions may be omitted from, or torn in, a tear line, such that the tear line becomes a continuous cut line. That is, it is within the scope of the present disclosure for each of the tear lines to be a continuous slit that penetrates a portion of the thickness of the material or that penetrates the entire thickness of the material, or something like that. For example, a cut line can be a continuous slit or it can be wider than a slit, without departing from the present disclosure.
[00039] The above embodiments can be described as having one or more panels adhered together by glue during assembly of the packaging embodiments. The term “glue” is intended to encompass all types of adhesives commonly used to hold the packaging packaging panels in place.

Various additions, modifications, alterations, etc., can be made to the representative modalities, without departing from the scope and scope of the description. PACKAGING FOR PACKAGING A PLURALITY OF ITEMS, the package comprising: a plurality of panels (15, 17, 21, 25) extending at least partially around an interior (133) of the packaging package (5); the plurality of end flaps (33, 37, 43, 47,35, 39, 45, 49) respectively in pivotable connection with respective panels of the plurality of panels (15, 17, 21,25), the plurality of end flaps (33, 37 , 43, 47, 35, 39,45, 49) are at least partially overlapping each other to thereby at least partially form a closed end (7, 9) of the packaging package (5); and at least one article protection flap (101) in pivotable connection with at least one end flap (37, 43,39, 45) of the plurality of end flaps (33, 37, 43, 47, 35,39, 45, 49 ) to engage at least one article (C) of the plurality of articles (C), the at least one article protection flap (101) extending from the closed end (7, 9) at least partially into the interior (133) of the packaging (5) characterized in that at least one article protection flap (101) is at least partially defined by a cut line (105) extending on the at least one end flap (37, 43, 39, 45).

METHOD OF FORMING A PACKAGING INTENDED TO CONDITION A PLURALITY OF ITEMS, the packaging being according to claim 1, the method comprising: obtaining a blanket (3) comprising a plurality of panels (15, 17, 21, 25) , a plurality of flanges (33, 37, 43, 47, 35, 39, 45, 49)a respectively in pivotable connection with respective panels of the plurality of panels (15, 17, 21, 25), and at least one protective flap of articles (101) in pivotable connection with at least one end flap (37, 43, 39, 45) of the plurality of end flaps (33, 37, 43, 47, 35, 39, 45, 49) to engage at least one item ( C) of the plurality of articles (C); forming an interior (133) of the packaging package (5) defined at least partially by a plurality of panels (15, 17, 21, 25), forming the interior (133) of the package ( 5) comprising forming an open-ended sleeve (131); at least partially closing one end (7.9) of the media package (5) before mutually overlapping at least partially the plurality of end flaps (33, 37, 43, 47,35, 39, 45, 49); and positioning the at least one article protection tab (101) to extend at least partially from the closed end (7, 9), into the interior (133) of the package, at least a portion of the at least one article protection tab. articles (101) is positioned to extend adjacent a respective corner (99) of the carton, the at least one end flap (37, 43, 39, 45) is in pivotable connection with at least one panel (17, 21) of the plurality of panels (15, 17, 21, 25) along a first fold line (61, 63), and at least a portion of the first fold line (61, 63) extends along the length of at least a portion of a respective corner (99); the at least one article protection flap (101) is in pivotable connection to at least one end flap (37, 43, 39, 45) along a second fold line (103), and the second fold line (103) is generally parallel to the first fold line (61, 63) characterized by at least one protective tab. The selection of articles (101) is at least partially defined by a cut line (105) extending into the at least one end flap (37, 43, 39,45).
