[00016] The present description generally refers to packaging packages that contain items such as containers, bottles, cans, etc. The articles can be used for packaging food and beverages, for example. Articles may be made from materials suitable in their composition for the packaging of the particular food or beverage item, and the materials include, but are not limited to, aluminum and/or other metals, glass, plastics, such as PET, LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, PP, PS, PVC, EVOH and nylon, and the like, or any combination thereof.
[00017] The packaging packages according to the present invention can accommodate articles of any shape. For illustrative purposes and not for the purpose of limiting the scope of the description, the detailed description presented below describes beverage containers (e.g. glass beverage bottles) as arranged within the packaging packaging modalities. In that specification, the terms "bottom", "top" and "top" indicate certain orientations with respect to fully assembled and upright packaging packages.
[00018] Figure 1 is a plan view of the external side 1 of a blanket, generally indicated at 3, used to form a package 5 (Fig. 7), according to a first representative embodiment of the present invention. The package 5 can be used to house a plurality of articles such as containers C (Fig. 6B). In the illustrated embodiment, containers C are bottles, having a smaller width B and a narrow top T including a cap CP. In the illustrated embodiment, package 5 is sized to accommodate eighteen containers C in a single layer in a 3x6 arrangement, but it is understood that package 5 can be sized and configured to house containers in the same quantity or in different quantities in more than one layer and/or in different row/column arrangements (eg 1x6, 2x6.4x6, 3x8, 2x6x2, 3x4x2, 2x9, 3x4, etc.), or just a single article. The top portion and ends of the carton 5 may be reinforced by a gusset insert 105 (Fig. 3-6B) formed from a gusset insert forming blanket 103 (Fig. 2). In the illustrated embodiment, the package 5 includes a first end 7 and a second end 9, each with a respective handle, generally indicated at 10 (Figures 6A and 7) for picking up and carrying the package at each end 7, 9. As will be discussed in more detail below, the loops 10 are formed from various features disposed on the package forming blanket 3.
[00019] In one embodiment, the first end 7 and the second end 9 of the package 5 each have features for protecting the articles contained therein (Fig. 11) to protect at least one article C of the plurality of articles. Additionally, the package 5 of the first embodiment may have this, the package 5 of the first embodiment may have article-protecting flaps 13 for protecting at least one article. The article-protection features 11 cushion the ends, 7, 9, of the package and prevent or reduce the likelihood of breakage of the containers C. In one embodiment, the article-protection flaps 13 are movable between a first position (Fig. 5) and a second position (not shown) in positioning between adjacent containers C in the package to reduce movement of the containers in the package and prevent breakage of the containers. Feature and article protection tabs may be similar or the same as those described in U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 13/419,740, filed March 14, 2012, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference. The article protection features 11 and/or the article protection tabs 13 may be shaped, arranged and/or configured in other ways without departing from the present invention. In addition, article protection features 11 and/or article protection tabs 13 may be omitted without departing from the present invention.
[00020] The package forming blanket 3 has a longitudinal axis L1 and a lateral axis L2. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the blanket includes a bottom panel 15 in pivotable connection with a first side panel 17 at a lateral fold line 19. A second side panel 21 is in pivotable connection with the bottom panel 15 at a lateral fold line 23 A top panel 25 is in pivotable connection with the first side panel 17 at a side folding line 27 and in pivotable connection to a locking panel 29 at a side folding line 31. Any of the top and bottom panels 25, 15, the first and second side panels 17, 21 and the anchor panel 29 may be shaped, arranged, otherwise configured, or omitted without departing from the present invention. For example, the carton forming blanket 3 may alternatively include two top panels that cooperate to form an upper part of the carton 5 or two bottom panels that cooperate to form a bottom of the carton. Additionally, securing panel 29 may be in pivotable connection with second side panel 21 in an alternative embodiment.
[00021] The bottom panel 15 is in pivotable connection to a first lower end flap 33 and a second lower end flap 35. The first side panel 17 is in pivotable connection to a first side end flap 37 and a second side end flap 39. The second side panel 21 is in pivotable connection to a first side end flap 43 and a second side end flap 45. The top panel 25 is in pivotable connection to a first top end flap 47 and a second upper end flap 49. In one embodiment, when the carton 5 is assembled, the end tabs 33, 37, 43, 47 close the first end 7 of the carton, and the tabs 35, 39, 45, 49 close the second end 9 of the package. According to an alternative embodiment of the present disclosure, different arrangements of flaps can be used to close the ends 7, 9, of the package 5.
[00022] The end flaps 33, 37, 43, 47 extend along a first marginal area of the package forming blanket 3, and are in pivotable connection to a first longitudinal fold line 61 extending along the blanket length. The end flaps 35, 39, 45, 49 extend along a second marginal region of the package forming blanket 3, and are in pivotable connection to a second longitudinal fold line 63, which also extends along the blanket length. The longitudinal fold lines 61, 63 can be, for example, substantially straight, or offset in one or more locations to contribute to blanket thickness or other factors. In one embodiment, the side panels 17, 21 have respective lozenge-shaped panels 65 that are formed by a fold line 67 that extends inwardly from the respective longitudinal fold line 61, 63. Also, the side end flaps 37 , 39, 43, 45 have a respective lateral fold line 69 extending from a lozenge-shaped panel 65 to allow a respective end 7, 9 to fold inwardly such that the top of the package 5 at each end ( the portion of the fold line 61, 63 connecting with the respective upper end flap 47, 49) is closer to the center of the package than to the bottom of the package at each end (the portion of the fold line connecting with the respective end tab lower 33, 35) . In this way, the ends 7, 9 become tapered ends, but it is understood that the ends of the package 5 can be otherwise molded, arranged, and/or shaped (e.g., straight or non-tapered) without departing from the present invention. Additionally, one or both of the side panels can be at least partially tapered such that the top panel 25 can be narrower than the bottom panel 15 in the longitudinal direction L1 of the blanket 3.
[00023] As shown in Figure 1, each of the side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45 may include a recessed upper edge 70 extending from the respective lateral fold lines 27, 23, with an oblique portion 70a and a generally laterally shaped portion 70b. The side portions 70b of the upper edges 70 may be offset relative to the respective side fold lines 27, 23 towards the bottom panel 15 to accommodate the end portions of the insert 105 at the closed ends 7, 9 of the carton 5 (Figures 5- 6B). The side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45 and the top edges 70 can be shaped, arranged and/or otherwise shaped without departing from the present invention.
[00024] In the embodiment of Figure 1, the package-forming blanket 3 has loop-forming features to form loops 10. In the illustrated embodiment, the loop-forming features comprise loop-forming tabs 73 in pivotable connection to a respective upper end flap 47, 49, at a longitudinal fold line separable from the respective upper end flap 47, 49, along cut lines 74 and 75. The loop-forming features may also include notches or openings 77 in the tabs. side ends 37, 39, 43 and 45. The openings 77 cooperate to provide an opening in a respective closed end 7, 9 to allow a respective handle forming tab 73 to be folded inwardly such that the package 5 can be gripped at a respective end. . The side end tabs 37, 39, 43, 45 may each also include respective upper portions 72 disposed above the respective apertures 77. Each of the loop forming tabs 73 may each include a longitudinal fold line 76, fold lines oblique 78 and a side cut 79. The oblique fold lines 78 and side cut 79 can form generally triangular shaped tabs 80 on loop-forming tabs 73 which can help accommodate the narrow top T of a container C adjacent to the respective one. handle 10. Likewise, when the respective handle forming tab 73 is folded inwardly through the openings 77 in the carton 5, the triangular tabs 80 may separate along respective cuts 79 and fold outwardly along the lines of oblique folding 78 when contacting the narrow top T of the respective container C. The packaging forming blanket 3 may have other features to form the loops 10, or the forming blanket of carton 3 and/or carton 5 may have one or more handles that are alternatively shaped, arranged, and/or shaped, without departing from the present invention. Furthermore, one or both of the loops 10 can be omitted without departing from the present invention.
[00025] In one embodiment, the package forming blanket 3 has features to form the article protection features 11 contained in the package 5. As shown in Figure 1, the side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45 have shape deformations of indentations 81 on the outer surface of the packaging forming blanket 3 such that the indentations on the inner surface form a protrusion on the inner surface of the blanket. The lower end flaps 33, 35 each have two rows of deformations in the form of indentations 83 on the inner surface of the packaging forming blanket 3 such that the indentations on the inner surface form a protrusion on the outer surface 1 of the packaging forming blanket carton 3. As shown in Figure 1, the top end flaps 47, 49 each have a respective distal edge 87, 89 having corner notches 91 and a center notch 93 to accommodate the article protection features 11 at the closed ends 7 , 9 of package 5(Figure 7). The indentations 81, 83 may be any deformation in a surface of a respective one of the side end flaps 37, 39, 43, 45 or lower end flaps 33, 35 such that the deformation may be any suitable deformation (e.g. a depression or concave protrusion , convex depression or overhang, flat depression or overhang, raised area, sunken area, etc., or any other suitable shape). In addition, indentations 81, 83 may be formed on the inner or outer surface of one or more of first side panel 17, second side panel 21, top panel 25, bottom panel 15 or top end flaps 47, 49 without departing from the present invention.
[00026] In the first embodiment, the packaging forming blanket 3 includes nine article protection flaps 13 arranged in a 3x3 arrangement, but the blanket may have more or less than nine article protection flaps, and the flaps may be otherwise arranged in other suitable row/column arrangements or in a random configuration in the back panel 15, including a single-row or single-column configuration, or any other suitable configuration. In other embodiments, the packaging forming blanket 3 may include article protection tabs that are different, similar or identical to other article protection tabs, without departing from the present invention. In the embodiment of Figure 1, the middle row of article protection tabs 13 is oriented 180 degrees relative to a row of article protection tabs, positioned closer to respective longitudinal fold lines 61, 63. In other embodiments, article protection flaps 13 may be shaped, arranged and/or otherwise configured without departing from the present invention.
[00027] As shown in Figure 1, the article protection flaps 13 individually pivotally connect with the bottom panel 15 at a respective lateral fold line 95 and are each at least partially defined by a cut 97 in the bottom panel. background. Alternatively, cut 97 may comprise other forms of lines of weakness (e.g. a tear line comprising cut lines separated by frangible incisions, a tear line which is formed by a series of mutually separated cuts, etc.) that allows the article protection flap 13 to be separated from the bottom panel 15 without departing from the present invention. In one embodiment, a slit or cut 98 extends laterally from a portion of the cut 97 that is opposite the lateral fold line 95. As shown in Figure 1, the article protection flap 13 may comprise generally longitudinal fold lines 99 extending from the side fold line 95. Any of the fold lines 95, 99 and/or cuts 97, 98 may be shaped, arranged, otherwise configured, and/or omitted such that the article protection tab 13 has any other shape or configuration, without departing from the present invention.
[00028] Figure 2 illustrates an outer surface 101 of the gusset insert forming blanket 103 used to form the gusset insert 105 (Figure 3) for use in package 5. As illustrated in Figure 2, the longitudinal axis L1 and the lateral axis L2 of the reinforcing insert forming blanket 103 are oriented such that the longitudinal axis L1 and the lateral axis L2 of the reinforcing insert forming blanket 103 behave like the respective longitudinal axes LI and lateral axes L2 of the forming blanket of carton 3 shown in Figure 1. In the illustrated embodiment, the reinforcing insert forming blanket 103 may be generally symmetrical about a central longitudinal axis and a central lateral axis. The gusset insert forming blanket 103 may include a center panel 107 and two gusset end panels 109, 111, respectively, in pivotable connection with the center panel 107 at their opposite ends. A first fold line or area 113 connects first gusset end panel 109 to center panel 107 at the first end of gusset insert forming blanket 103, and a second gusset line or area 15 connects second gusset end panel gusset 111 to center panel 107 at the second end of the gusset insert forming blanket 103. In the illustrated embodiment, each of the fold areas 113, 115 may include a plurality of fold lines (e.g., marks, creases, cut lines, etc.). Alternatively, fold areas 113, 115 may be other lines or areas of weaknesses for folding gusset end panels 109, 111 relative to center panel 107 (e.g., a single fold line). Apertures 117 may interrupt the folding areas 113, 115 to help prevent bunching of the forming blanket material of the reinforcing insert at the folds of the reinforcing insert 105 in the assembled carton 5. As shown in Figure 2, the forming blanket of the gusset insert 103 may include first gusset end flaps 119, 121 in pivotable connection to opposite sides of the first gusset end panel 109 along respective lateral fold lines 123, 125, and second gusset end flaps 127, 129 in pivotable connection with second gusset end panel 111 along respective lateral fold lines 131, 133. Reinforcement insert forming blanket 103 may be shaped, arranged, otherwise configured, and/or omitted, without deviate from the present invention.
[00029] In the illustrated embodiment, the gusset insert forming blanket 103 includes features to form the lugs 10 on the carton 5. Each of the gusset end panels 109, 111 may include a cutout or lug opening 135 with a tab. inner loop forming tabs 137. The inner loop forming tabs 137 may be in pivotable connection to respective gusset end panels 109, 111 along longitudinal fold lines 139, and each of the inner loop forming tabs 137 may include an intermediate fold line 141. The gusset end tabs 119, 121, 127, 129 may each include a notch or loop-forming opening 143 that is generally in alignment with respective loop openings 135. in the gusset end panels 109, 111. An upper portion 145 may be disposed above each of the openings 143 in each of the gusset end flaps 119, 121, 127, 129.
[00030] According to the first embodiment, the reinforcement insert forming blanket 103 can be transformed into the reinforcement insert 105 by folding the reinforcement end flaps 119, 121, 127, 129, along the respective lines of lateral folding 123, 125, 131, 133, and gluing the gusset end flaps 119, 121, 127, 129, in face-to-face contact with the respective gusset end panels 109, 111, such as by applied glue trails the gusset end flaps and/or the gusset end panels. In the illustrated embodiment, the gusset end tabs 119, 121, 127, 129 are adhered to the inner surface 149 (Fig. 3) of the gusset end panels 109, 111. Alternatively, the gusset end tabs may be adhered to the outer surface 101 of the gusset end panels.
[00031] As shown in Figure 3, in a representative embodiment, the package 5 can be assembled by initially adhering the reinforcing insert 105 to the top panel 25 and the upper end flaps 47, 49 of the package forming blanket 3 after forming the glue strips 151 on the outer surface 101 of the reinforcing insert 105 and/or the inner surface 153 of the package forming blanket 3. As shown in Figure 2, the glue tracks 151 may be formed on the center panel 107 and gusset end panels 109, 111, for example. The gusset insert 105 may be positioned on the carton forming blanket 3 so that the central panel 107 is in face-to-face contact with the top panel 25. In one embodiment, the outer surface of the gusset insert 105 is in contact with the inner surface 153 of the package forming blanket 3. The reinforcing insert 105 is sized such that the fold areas 113, 115 are generally in alignment with, and overlay the respective fold lines 61, 63 , where the top end tabs 47, 49 connect to the respective ends of the top panel 25. As shown in Figure 3, the gusset insert 105 is positioned relative to the top panel 25 such that the loop opening 135 in the gusset end panel 109 and the loop openings 143 in the gusset end flaps 119, 121 are generally in alignment with and overlay the loop forming flap 73 on the top end flap 47. Also, the flap handle opening 135 on gusset end panel 111 and handle opening 143 on gusset end tabs 127, 129 generally are in alignment with and overlay tab forming tab 73 on top end tab 49 Reinforcement insert 105 may otherwise be mounted on blanket 3 without departing from the scope of the disclosure. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the gusset end panels 109, 111 are not adhered to the top end flaps 47, 49. In another alternative, the fold areas 113, 115 may be offset relative to the fold lines 61, 63.
[00032] According to the representative embodiment, the package forming blanket 3 with reinforcement insert 105 can be further assembled in the shape of the package 5 by folding along the lateral folding lines 31, 19 and gluing the fastening tab 29 to the second side panel 21. As shown in Figure 4, the blanket can be folded along fold lines 19, 23, 27, 31 to form an open ended sleeve 155. The package forming blanket 3 and insert gussets 105 may otherwise be transformed into open ended sleeve 155, Ed using alternative folding and gluing steps without departing from the scope of the present invention.
[00033] As shown in Figure 5, the side end flaps 37, 43 are folded inward along the longitudinal fold line 61 and the fold lines 67 to at least partially close the first end 7, and the end flap The lower end 33 is folded up along the longitudinal fold line 61 in face-to-face contact with the lower portions of the side end flaps 37, 43. The upper edges 70 of the side end flaps 37, 43 may be further disposed in close proximity. of the folding area 113 of the gusset insert 105. The upper end flap 47 and the gusset end panel 109 can be folded down along the length of the respective longitudinal fold line 61 and fold area 113 such that the flaps gusset ends 119, 121 are in face-to-face contact with side end tabs 37, 43. Loop 10 at first end 7 may be formed when forming tab d and handle 73 of the upper end flap 47, the handle openings 135, 143 of the insert 105 and the handle openings 77 of the side end flaps 37, 43 are generally in alignment with the closed end 7. upper end 47, gusset end panel 109, gusset end flaps 119, 121, side end flaps 37, 43 and lower end flap 33 may be selectively adhered to each other to close first end 7 of carton 5 (Fig. 6A and 7). In one embodiment, according to Fig. 6B, containers C can be loaded into the partially assembled package 5 through the second open end 9. The second end 9 of the package 5 can be closed in a similar manner as that of the first end 7 by folding, respectively overlapping, and selectively adhering, the side end tabs 39, 45, the lower end tab 35, the upper end tab 49, the gusset end panel 111, and the gusset end tabs 127, 129. is shown in Figure 7. One or both ends 7, 9 may be shaped, arranged, otherwise configured, or omitted, without departing from the present invention. Additionally, the open ended sleeve 155 may alternatively be loaded with containers and closed without departing from the present invention. For example, ends 7, 9 can be closed in any order, and containers C can be loaded before or after closing one or both ends 7, 9.
[00034] Each of the loops 10 may include the loop forming tab 73 (e.g., the first loop-forming feature), the loop opening 135, and the loop-forming tab 137 (e.g., the second feature of loop formation), the loop openings 143 (e.g., the third loop-forming feature), and the loop openings 77 (e.g., the fourth loop-forming feature), which are generally in alignment. at the ends of the package. The handles 10 can be used to grip the package 5 by pressing against the elongated handle tabs 73 inwardly through the handle openings 135, 143 of the insert 105 and the handle openings 77 of the side end tabs 119, 121, 127, 129 to provide a handle opening at the closed ends 7, 9 of the carton 5. The inwardly folding handle tabs 73 can contact the handle tabs 137 on the respective handle opening 135 and fold the handle tabs 137 inwardly along. of the extension of the fold lines 139, 141. Therefore, the handle forming tabs 137 can help the handles 10 to become thicker where the user grips the handles to help provide comfort to the user and/or help strengthen the handles . The top portions 72 of the side end tabs 37, 43, 39, 45, the top portions 145 of the gusset end tabs 119, 121, 127, 129, and the gusset end panel portions 109, 111 and the gusset tabs upper ends 47, 49 above the lugs 10 form respective reinforcing portions 157 at the respective closed ends 7, 9, which may provide at least four layers of material over the lugs 10 (Figures 6A and 7) that can help to reinforce the package 5 over the loops 10. The loop forming tabs 73 may further strengthen the package over the loops 10 when folded inwardly against the upper portions 72 of the respective side end tabs 37, 43, 39, 35. Strengthening portions 157 may include five layers of material over the loops 10 to strengthen the closed ends 7, 9, over the loops. The handles 10 may alternatively be shaped, arranged, shaped and/or reinforced, without departing from the present invention.
[00035] Figure 8 is a plan view of an outer surface 301 of an alternative gusset insert forming blanket 303 to form a gusset insert (not shown) in accordance with a second embodiment of the present invention. The second modality is generally similar to the first modality, except for the indicated variations and variations that will be evident to those usually skilled in the art. In this sense, similar or identical characteristics of the modalities are given the same or similar reference numbers. Reinforcement insert forming blanket 303 may be for use with package forming blanket 3 of the first embodiment or with an alternative to the package forming blanket to form a reinforced package (not shown). As shown in Figure 8, blanket 303 includes upper reinforcing tabs 361, 363 in pivotable connection with center panel 107 along lateral fold lines 365, 367, which may be collinear with, or offset relative to, respective lateral fold lines. 123 and 125, 131, 133. The upper gusset flap 361 is pivotally connectable to the gusset end flaps 119, 127 along respective fold areas 113, 115, and the upper gusset flap 363 is connectable from swivel shape for gusset end flaps 121, 129 along respective folding areas 113, 115. When gusset insert forming blanket 303 is formed from a gusset insert (not shown), the gusset end flaps gusset 361, 363 are folded into face-to-face contact with center panel 107 to help reinforce the top panel of the carton (not shown). Reinforcement insert forming blanket 303 may be shaped, arranged and/or configured in other ways without departing from the present invention.
[00036] Blankets according to the present invention can be, for example, formed from coated cardboard and similar materials. For example, the inner and/or outer sides of blankets can be coated with a clay-based type coating. The clay-based type coating can be printed with product information, advertising, price coding, and other information or images. The blankets can then be coated with a varnish to protect any printed information on the blanket. Blankets can also be coated with, for example, a moisture barrier layer on one or both sides of the blanket. According to the above-described embodiments, blankets can be constructed of cardboard material of a thickness such that it is heavier and stiffer than ordinary paper. Blankets can also be constructed of other materials, such as cardboard, stiff paper, or any other material that has adequate properties to allow the wrapping package to function at least as generally described herein. Blankets can also be laminated or coated with one or more sheet-like materials, applied over selected panels or panel sections.
[00037] According to the above-described embodiments of the present disclosure, a fold line may be any form of substantially linear, although not necessarily straight, brittleness that facilitates folding around it. More specifically, but not for the purpose of reducing the scope of the present description, fold lines include: a crease line, such as lines formed with a blunt marking knife, or the like, that creates a crushed portion in the material when along the desired line of weakness; a cut that extends partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of cuts that extends partially inward and/or completely along the length of the material along the desired line of weakness; and various combinations of these characteristics.
[00038] As an example, a tear line may include: a slit that extends partially into the material along the desired line of weakness, and/or a series of spaced slits that extend partially inward and/or completely through the material along the desired line of fragility, or various combinations of these features. As a more specific example, one type of tear line is in the form of a series of spaced slits that extend completely through the material, with adjacent slits being slightly spaced apart, so that an incision (eg, a piece of bridge-like appearance) is set between adjacent slits to typically temporarily connect material along the tear line. The incisions are broken during tearing along the tear line. The incisions typically constitute a relatively small percentage of the tear line, and alternatively the incisions may be omitted or torn in a tear line, such that the tear line is a continuous cut line. That is, it is within the scope of the present disclosure for each of the tear lines to be replaced with a continuous slit or the like. For example, a cut line can be a continuous slit or it can be wider than a slit without departing from the present description.
[00039] The above embodiments can be described as having one or more panels adhered together by gluing during the lifting of the packaging packaging embodiments. The term "glue" is intended to encompass all types of adhesives commonly used to hold the packaging carton panels in place.
[00040] The foregoing description of the disclosure illustrates and describes various modalities. As various changes can be made to the above construction without departing from the scope of the description, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. Furthermore, the scope of the present description encompasses various modifications, alterations, combinations, etc., of the above-described embodiments, which fall within the scope of the claims. Furthermore, the disclosure shows and describes only selected modalities of development; but the disclosure is capable of use in several other combinations, modifications and environments, and is capable of alterations or modifications within the scope of the inventive concept as expressed herein, taking into account the above guidelines, and/or that are contained in the experience or in the knowledge of the relevant technique. In addition, certain features and aspects of each embodiment may be selectively interchanged and applied to other illustrated and unillustrated embodiments of the present disclosure.
