TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] The present invention relates to flexible film packaging for food items. Specifically, the present invention relates to flexible film packages that have lines of weakness to facilitate opening the packages and dispensing food contents. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[002] Food items are usually sold in sealed plastic packaging. The packages are typically made by filling and sealing devices in a vertical manner so that a web of flexible film material is formed in a tube. This tube is sealed at one end and then filled with the contents of the package. The second end is then also cut and sealed to seal the contents of the package therein and then individualized. To open this type of packaging and access the food item, a consumer can tear the packaging and remove a portion of the packaging. In certain packages to completely remove one end of the package including the end seal to allow the contents to be dispensed into a suitable container, for example, a cup.
[003] Flexible film packaging includes several aspects to help the consumer to open the packaging. Some packages include a weakening of the packaging material along a given line so that a tear can spread along that line when a user opens the package. A disadvantage of this type of packaging is that the tear does not always follow the weakened line. Instead, the tear can deviate from the desired propagation path outlined by the weakened line.
[004] It is known to build the weakened lines on the packages using a laser. The laser can remove the packaging material along a line through the packaging without cutting entirely through the packaging material. Often, the packaging is so weakened by laser tracing that the packaging loses its structural integrity and does not remain intact during its vertical filling and sealing manufacturing process, and sometimes during normal handling by a user before the packaging is intended. to be opened. In packages where the laser tracing is less deep to prevent the elastic force of the package, the dashed line may be less pronounced on the side wall and may be difficult for the user to see. To make a dashed line more visible to a consumer, signs of printing on the packaging can highlight the laser tracing. For example, the package may have the words “TEAR HERE” and an arrow pointing to the laser tracing printed on it. However, when laser tracing is applied after printing, the alignment of the marks and the laser dashed line may not match. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[005] A flexible film package is provided. The flexible film package includes a body that has a lower end that includes a lower seal, an upper end that includes an upper seal, a longitudinal geometric axis that passes through the upper and lower ends, and a side wall that connects the upper ends and bottom and encloses an internal part that includes a food product. The package also includes a main weakening line and a pair of substantially parallel secondary weakening lines formed on the side wall. The main weakening line is between and substantially parallel to the secondary weakening lines. The main line of weakness includes a plurality of dashed lines spaced by non-dashed parts of the side wall. Each secondary line of weakness includes a plurality of dashed lines spaced by non-dashed parts of the side wall. Each of the non-dashed parts has a length and each of the dashed lines has a length, width and depth. Each of the non-dashed parts between the dashed lines of the main weakening line is longer than the non-dashed parts of the side wall between the dashed lines of the secondary weakening lines. The dashed lines of the main weakening line each have at least one of greater length, width and depth than each of the dashed lines of the secondary weakening line. The main weakening line is configured to propagate tear through the side wall. At least one of the secondary weakening lines is configured to propagate the tear through the side wall if the tear deviates from the main weakening line.
[006] The package may have at least one tertiary weakening line formed on the side wall above another tertiary weakening line formed on the side wall below another of the secondary weakening lines. The side wall can be provided with a first side edge and a second side edge opposite the first side edge, and at least one of the dashed lines of the main weakening line can intersect with at least one of the first and second side edges. The package may also include a rib seal that extends along the longitudinal geometric axis between the top seal and the bottom seal so that at least one of the dashed lines of the main weakening line can intersect with at least part of the seal. rib. The package may also include a plurality of fold lines on the side wall around which the package is folded so that at least one of the dashed lines of the main line of weakness can intersect with at least one of the fold lines.
[007] A method of manufacturing flexible film packaging is provided. The method includes providing flexible film material; tracing the main weakening line through at least part of the side wall; tracing one of the secondary weakening lines through at least part of the film material and above the main weakening line; tracing another of the secondary weakening lines through at least part of the film material and below the main weakening line; forming the film material in a tube; seal the bottom end of the tube; fill the tube with the food product; seal the upper end of the tube; and individualizing the packaging from the flexible film material.
[008] A flexible film packaging method is provided. The method includes starting a tear line on the side wall of the package; propagating the tear line along the main weakening line through at least a part of the side wall of the package; propagating the tear line along one of the secondary weakening lines through at least a part of the side wall of the package if the tear line deviates from the main weakening line; separate at least a part of the upper seal from the side wall of the package to gain access to the food product from the inside; and dispensing the food product from the packaging. [021] A flexible film package as described herein includes a main weakening line and a pair of secondary weakening lines to facilitate opening the package. The main weakening line is indicated on the side wall of the package in a more visible way than the secondary weakening lines, such as in a color contrast with the color of the side wall so that the main weakening line is clearly visible on the consumer packaging. Although the secondary weakening lines may also be visible to the consumer, they are much less pronounced on the side wall of the package so that even in the absence of a “TEAR HERE” instruction, it may be clear to the consumer that the tear must be started near the main weakening line.
[022] The package may contain foods such as powdered drinks, powdered dessert, snacks, condiments, and fillings that can be dispensed in a suitable container or directly into a consumer's mouth. A consumer can open the package by tearing the package along the main weakening line of the package. If the tear deviates from the main weakening line, the tear can propagate along one of the secondary weakening lines through the package, ensuring a controlled and predictable pattern for one end of the package to be completely removed with ease to allow the consumer to access the food contained in the packaging. The main weakening line and the secondary weakening lines can be formed by a laser in a pattern that allows the consumer to easily see the desired tear line and provides the film material with an increase in tensile strength in order to avoid breakage during the filling and sealing process in vertical form.
[023] With reference to Figures 1 to 3, a package 10 has an elongated body that includes a side wall 12 with a first side edge part 14 and a second side edge part 16 opposite the first side edge part 14. The side wall 12 encloses an internal part of the package 10 where a food product 30 can be stored. The package 10 includes an upper seal 18 at an upper end 20 of the package 10 and a lower seal 22 at a lower end of the package 10. The side wall 12 of the package 10 includes the sealing areas 15 and 17 along the first and second. side edge parts 14 and 16, respectively, as shown in Figure 3.
[024] With reference to figure 3, the side wall 12 of the package 10 can be folded around the fold lines 19 and 21 to join the sealing areas 15 and 17 and form a rib seal 26. This rib seal 26 can extend in one direction along the longitudinal geometric axis of the package 10 and can connect the top and bottom seals 18 and 22. Any of the seals described above can be made by conventional methods, including, for example, the application of heat and pressure to create a laminated seal. When sealed by such seals, a food product inside the package 10 is protected from external elements such as moisture and oxygen.
[025] With additional reference to Figures 1 to 3, the package 10 also includes multiple lines of weakness that extend through at least a part of the side wall 12 of the package 10. A main weakening line 32 includes a series of parts removed or broken lines 34. An upper secondary weakening line 36 extends through at least part of the side wall 12 of the package 10 above the main weakening line 32. A lower secondary weakening line 38 extends across at least at least a part of the side wall 12 of the package 10 below the main weakening line 32. The secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 include a series of removed parts or dashed lines 40 and 41, respectively.
[026] The secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 can be parallel to each other and to the main weakening line 32, as shown in Figure 1. Alternatively, the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 can converge or diverge with respect to each other or with respect to the main weakening line 32. Furthermore, although the main weakening line 32 and the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 have been illustrated as being perpendicular to the longitudinal geometric axis of the package 10, any one or all of the weakening lines weakening can be tilted at various angles to the longitudinal geometric axis. Furthermore, although the main weakening line 32 and the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 have been shown to be straight, the weakening lines 32, 36, and 38 can be curved (e.g., convex, concave, wavy, etc. .).
[027] With reference to Figures 5 to 7, the package 10 includes a removable part 23 formed on the side wall 12. The removable part 23 can be separated from the package 10 along the main weakening line 32, or along any one of the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38. The removable part 23 provides an access opening to dispense the contents as well as an obvious footprint aspect.
[028] The main weakening line 32 defines an intended path for a tear line 39 through the side wall 12 of the package 10, as shown in Figure 5. As shown in Figure 4, a dashed line 34 of the main weakening line 32 can cross the first side edge 14 of the package 10 and another dashed line 34 of the main weakening line 32 can cross the second side edge 16 of the package 10. The crossing of the dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32 with the side edges 14 and 16 allows the user to easily initiate a tear along the tear line 39, as shown in Figure 5. Alternatively, the package 10 may include a tear notch (not shown) aligned with the main weakening line 32. The notch The tear notch can extend completely or partially through the side wall of the package 10. The tear notch can provide a tear initiation location that facilitates removing the removable part 23 of the package 10 along the main weakening line 32.
[029] With reference to Figure 5, to open the package 10, the consumer can grab the package 10 and apply a force to initiate a tear in the side wall 12 at the intersection of the dashed line 34 with the side edge 14. It can then be formed a tear line 33 that follows along a path outlined by the dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32. The tear line 39 can separate the removable part 23, together with the top seal 18, from the rest of the package 10. The The pattern of the dashed lines 34 and the non-dashed parts 44 of the main weakening line 32 may allow the user to separate the removable part 23 from the package 10 without deviating substantially from the tear line 39.
[030] As commented in the context below, the main line 32 can be provided with dashed lines 34 and non-dashed parts 44 that have approximately the same length. The presence of the non-dashed parts 44 of such length between the dashed parts 34 increases the likelihood that the tear line 39 will be deviated from the main weakening line 32. In contrast, the extensions of the non-dashed parts 49 and 50 between the dashed lines 40 and 41 of the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 are significantly smaller and increase the likelihood that the tear line 39 will propagate along one of the secondary weakening lines 36 or 38 without deviation.
[031] For example, during the propagation of the tear line 39 through a non-dashed part 44 of the main weakening line 32, the tear line 39 can deviate in one direction to the upper secondary weakening line 36, as illustrated in Figure 6. The tear line 39 can then propagate through the side wall 12 of the package 10 until it intersects with the secondary weakening line 36 and follows the secondary weakening line 36 through the side wall 12 to separate the removable part 23 of the package. 10.
[032] Alternatively, the tear line 39 can deviate in one direction towards the lower secondary weakening line 38 and propagate through the side wall 12 of the package 10 until it intersects with the secondary weakening line 38. As shown in Figure 7 , the tear line 39 can then follow the secondary weakening line 38 through the package 10 to separate the removable part 23 from the package 10. Therefore, the main weakening line 32 and the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 facilitate the spread of the tear line 39 along a controlled and predictable pattern, so that the removable part 23 that includes the top seal 18 can be readily removed by a consumer and the food product 30 can be dispensed from the package 10, as shown in Figure 8 .
[033] Although package 10 has been illustrated as having only a secondary weakening line 36 above a secondary weakening line 38 below main weakening line 32, packaging 10 can be made of two or more secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 formed on the side wall 12 above and / or below the main weakening line 32. For example, the side wall 10 can include a tertiary line of weakness above the secondary weakening lines 36 and another tertiary line of weakness below the line of weakening. secondary weakening 38. Tertiary weakening lines can be identical or similar to secondary weakening lines 36 and 38, as in dimensions, pattern, and / or function. Alternatively, the tertiary weakening lines may have different dimensions and / or patterns.
[034] In this approach, if the tear line deviates upward from both the main weakening line 32 and the secondary weakening line 36 above the main weakening line 32, the tear line will cross and follow a tertiary weakening line parallel to and situated above the secondary weakening line 36. Conversely, if the tear line deviates downward from both the main weakening line 32 and the secondary weakening line 38 located below the main weakening line 32, the tear line will cross and following a tertiary weakening line parallel to and located below the secondary weakening line 38. The package 10 may have different patterns from the main (P), secondary (s) and tertiary (T) weakening lines. For example, the pattern can be any of TSPST, TSPS, SPST, SPSPS, or the like.
[035] With reference to Figures 9 to 11, the flexible film material that forms the sidewall 12 can include multiple layers of material. For example, side wall 12 can include at least one outer layer 43, an ink layer 47, and an inner layer 45. The outer layer 43 and inner layer 45 can be made of at least one material from a group that includes PET (polyethylene terephthalate) and OPP (oriented polypropylene film). The ink layer 47 can be sandwiched between the outer layer 43 and the inner layer 45, and can include printed brand and product information. Either or both of the inner layers 45 and outer layers 43 of the side wall 12 of the package 10 can be metallized to increase the protection of the food product 30 contained in the package 10.
[036] It should be appreciated that the relative thickness of each of layers 43, 45 and 47 in Figures 9 to 11 was illustrated for illustrative purposes only and was not drawn to scale. Furthermore, although only the outer layer 43, the inner layer 45 and the ink layer 47 of the sidewall 12 have been illustrated in Figures 9 to 11, the sidewall 12 may include one or more additional inner layers, for example , a sheet layer, a PET and / or OPP layer, and a sealing layer. The sealing layer can be made of EXAMPLE, (polyethylene) or other material suitable to be in contact with the food product 30 and which has adequate sealing characteristics.
[037] The dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32 can be around four to six millimeters in length (designated, for example, by the reference number 42 in Figure 9) separated by non-eliminated or non-dashed parts 44 of the side wall 12, which can be around 4 to 6 millimeters in length (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 46 in Figure 9). The dashed lines 40 and 41 of the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 can be around one to three millimeters in length (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 46 in Figure 9) separated by non-eliminated or not broken parts 49 and 50 the side wall 12, which can be from 0.25 to 0.75 mm in length (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 52 in Figure 9).
[038] The dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32 can be 0.4 to about 0.6 mm wide (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 54 in Figure 9), and can be around 1 to around 2 millimeters in depth (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 56 in Figure 10). The dashed lines 40 and 41 of the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 can be around 0.1 to about 0.3 mm wide (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 58 in Figure 9), and can be around 0.25 to around 1 millimeter in depth (designated, for example, by the numerical reference 60 in figure 10). Although dashed lines 34, 40 and 41 are illustrated as extending across the entire package 10, they can extend across a shorter length and / or different relative lengths.
[039] The dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32 and the dashed lines 40 and 41 of the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 can be traced with one or more lasers in the flexible film material from which the packaging 10 is made. carbon dioxide laser or other suitable laser can be used to trace the dashed lines 34, 40, and 41 on the side wall 12 of the package 10.
[040] With reference to Figures 10 and 11, the depth of the dashed lines 40 and 41 of the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38 may be less than the depth of the dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32, and the depth of the lines. dashes 34 of the main weakening line 32 may be greater than the thickness of the outer layer 43. Specifically, the depth of the dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32 may be greater than the depth of the outer layer 43 and the inner layer 45 The dashed lines 34 can pass through the outer layer 43, the ink layer 47, and a part of the inner layer 45 to provide the package 10 with a main weakening line 32 that is clearly visible to the consumer. For example, the outer layer 43 can be transparent, the ink layer 47 can be orange, and the inner layer 45 can be white so that the dashed lines 34 that pass through the outer layer 43, the ink layer 47 and a part of the inner layer 45 results in a white main weakening line 32 that would be highly visible on the orange colored side wall 12. It should be appreciated that the inner layer 45 and the paint layer 47 can be of any suitable color, including colors that are selected due to their high contrast with respect to each other.
[041] In another approach, the dashed lines 34 of the main weakening line 32 may have a depth that is less than a thickness of the outer layer 43 of the sidewall 12 of the package 10. Furthermore, despite the dashed lines 34, 40 and 41 have been illustrated as passing through the outer layer 43, the ink layer 47, and part of the inner layer 45, the dashed lines 34, 40 and 41 may alternatively pass through the inner layer 45, the ink layer 47 and a part of the outer layer 43. This approach can be achieved by laser tracing on an opposite surface of the flexible film material from which the side wall of the package 10 is made.
[042] The multiple lines of weakness 32, 36 and 38 which have the dimensions indicated above do not weaken the structural integrity of the side wall 12 of the package 10 to an inadequate degree. Instead, the pattern of the dashed parts 34 and 40, 41 and the respective non-dashed parts 44, 49 and 50 of the main and secondary weakening lines 32, 36 and 38 can provide the side wall 12 with sufficient elastic strength to remain intact during the vertical filling and sealing process as well as routine handling by a user. It should be appreciated that although the pattern of the dashed lines 34, 40 and 41 has been shown to be uniform, the dashed lines 34, 40 and 41 may have a non-uniform pattern within the length variations for the dashed and non-dashed pastes as herein. trained.
[043] The package 10 can have a length as measured from the top end 20 to the bottom end 24 around 75mm to around 200mm, and a width as measured from the first side edge 14 to the second side edge 16 around 15 mm to around 40 mm. It should be appreciated that the dimensions of the package 10 and the lines of weakness 32, 36 and 38 have been provided for purposes of illustration only, and that the principles of this description can be used to provide multiple lines of weakness in flexible film packages of any size. .
[044] Referring now to Figure 12, an exemplary method for manufacturing flexible film packaging 10 is illustrated. One or more rolls 82 can be used to feed flexible film material 80 to and along the filling device and vertical seal 100. A laser applicator 90 can be used to trace the flexible film material 80 to form the main weakening line 32, the upper secondary weakening line 36, and the lower secondary weakening line 38. It must be It is appreciated that although a laser applicator has been shown, the main and secondary weakening lines 32, 36 and 38 can be formed by another suitable technique, for example, micro abrasion or die cutting.
[045] The main and secondary weakening lines 32, 36 and 38 can be formed in the flexible film material 80 before feeding the flexible film material 80 into the vertical form filling and sealing device 100, as shown in Figure 12 By another approach, a laser applicator can be incorporated into the vertical form filling and sealing device 100 so that the main and secondary weakening lines 32, 36 and 38 can be added during the feeding of the flexible film material 80 through of the vertical form filling and sealing device 100. In yet another approach, two laser applicators can trace the flexible film material 80 on both sides to form the main and secondary weakening lines 32, 36 and 38.
[046] When the flexible film material 80 is being fed over a forming tube 110 of the vertical form filling and sealing device 100, a part of the flexible film material 80, generally corresponding to the sealing areas 15 and 17 of the Figure 3, it can bend around the forming tube 110 and is sealed along a vertical direction by a pair of longitudinal sealing jaws 120 to form the rib seal 26. The flexible film material 80 is then sealed in a horizontal direction by the pair of transverse sealing jaws 130 to form the end seals 18 and 22. The jaws 130 can also be used or to cut or spread the flexible film material 80 to individualize the package 10 which has the main weakening line 32 and the secondary weakening lines 36 and 38, as shown in Figure 12.
[047] Thus configured, the packaging 10 created by such a method and as otherwise described in the context provides the consumer with a clearly visible starting point for tearing a package when compared to the previous packages provided to consumers. Furthermore, the tear propagates more reliably along the tear line either along the main weakening line or along one of the secondary weakening lines. In addition, the package 10 which has the main and secondary weakening lines 32, 36 and 38 has sufficient elastic strength to withstand both the vertical filling and sealing process and the routine handling by a consumer.
[048] Those skilled in the art will recognize that various modifications, changes and combinations can be made with respect to the modalities described above without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention, and that such modifications, changes and combinations must be viewed as being within the scope of the concept.
