The present disclosure is generally related to the various aspects of materials, packaging, elements, articles, containers and methods for producing such materials, packaging, elements, articles and containers. Although several different aspects, implementations and modalities of the disclosure are provided, numerous interrelationships between, their combinations and modifications of the various inventions, aspects, implementations and modalities of the disclosure are thus contemplated. In an illustrated embodiment, the present disclosure is related to the formation of a container to house, heat and / or cook one or more food items. The container may be suitable for cooking the item or food items in a microwave oven. However, in other embodiments, the disclosure can be used to form articles or containers not used for microwave cooking.
Figures IA and 1B show a container 3, for housing a food product (not shown). The construct or container 3 is formed from a blanket 5 generally flat (Figure 2) which is pressed into a molding tool 7. In one embodiment, blanket 2 can have one or more layers of interactive material with microwaves (not shown). Alternatively, blanket 2 can be free of interactive material with microwaves.
As shown in Figure 1A and 1B, the container 3 has a bottom wall 11, a vertical side wall 13 and a flange 15 in the upper portion of the side wall. As shown in Figure 1, the flange 15 comprises an upper portion 17 extending laterally outwardly from the upper portion of the side wall 13 and a lower portion 19 which foldably connects to the upper portion. In one embodiment, the upper portion 17 has an indentation 21 and the lower portion 19 has an edge 23 which is positioned adjacent to an inner side of the indentation 21. The flange 15 can be referred to as a "collar wound flange", wherein the the lower portion 19 foldably connects to the upper portion 17 and is rolled into a collar under the upper portion.
In one embodiment, the bottom wall 11 and the side wall 13 form an interior space 25 of the container 3. The food product (not shown) can be placed in the interior space 25 and can be in contact with the bottom wall 11 and the side wall 13, or the food product can be supported by the bottom wall without contact with the side wall.
Figures 2 to 9A are schematic views of the molding tool 7 in various positions to transform blanket 5 into container 3. In the illustrated embodiment, tool 7 includes an upper (first) tooling assembly 41 and a lower (second) tooling assembly 43 The upper and lower tooling assemblies, 41 and 43 are independently movable in the vertical direction Z along a central axis Al of the assembly to transform blanket 5 into container 3. As shown in Figure 2, the upper and lower tooling assemblies, 41 , 43 are movable in the vertical direction Z to an open position to form a gap between the assemblies such that a blanket 5 that transits in the horizontal direction X is positioned between the upper and lower tool assemblies before the forming process.
In one embodiment, the lower tooling assembly 43 has a male molding portion 51 with a hinged nose portion 53 and a base portion 55. The lower tooling assembly 43 comprises a stamping ring 57 and collar 59 adjacent to the base portion 55 and a base 63 of the bottom tooling assembly. The stamping ring 57 and the collar 59 can generally extend around the molding portion of the male 51 and the central axis Al of the tool 7. The base portion 55 has an outer surface 65 that cooperates with an outer surface 67 of the tool. hinged nose part 53 to shape the container 3. The collar 59 has a molding edge 68 which includes a projection 69 on its top surface being slidable with respect to the base portion 55 and the base 63. The molding portion of the male 51 and the collar 59 may otherwise be shaped, arranged, positioned and / or configured without departing from disclosure.
In the illustrated embodiment, the upper tooling assembly 41 includes a support 70 and a cavity block 71 having an upper recess 73. The recess 73 can include an outer surface having a shape that generally corresponds to the outer surfaces 65, 67 of the lower tooling assembly 43 The upper tooling assembly 41 has a first collar 75 adjacent to the cavity block 71 and a second collar 77 adjacent and radially outwardly from the first collar. The first and second collars 75, 77 can generally extend around the cavity block 71 and the central axis Al of tool 7. In one embodiment, collar 77 is mounted to bracket 70. Upper tool assembly 41 has a ring pattern 79 adjacent the second collar 77 and generally radially aligned with the embossing ring 57 of the lower tooling assembly 43. As shown in detail in Figure 8, the first collar 75 has a molding edge 80 with a curved surface 81 and the second collar 77 has a molding edge 82 with an inclined or curved surface 83. molding edge 80 of the first collar 75 can generally be aligned with the molding edge 82 of the second collar 77. edges 80, 82 and surfaces 81, 83 can be modeled in another way without departing from disclosure. In addition, the first collar 75, the second collar 77 and the cavity block 71 can be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned and / or configured without departing from the disclosure.
In one embodiment, collars 59, 75, 77 cooperate to act as molding characteristics for flange 85. As shown in Figure 2, collar 59 is arranged opposite collars 75, 77, and collars are positionable to form a first portion (for example, the lower portion 19) of the flange 15, fold the first portion with respect to a second portion (for example, the upper portion 17) of the flange and secure at least a portion of the flange 15 between the collar 59 and the collars 75, 77. The molding characteristics of the flange 85 can be otherwise shaped, arranged, positioned and / or configured without departing from the disclosure.
A method of forming container 3 from blanket 5 is described below. The container 3 of the present disclosure is formed from the blanket 5 by feeding the blanket into the molding tool 7 and operating the tool by pressing and molding the blanket into the shape of the container. Figure 2 shows the open position of the upper and lower tooling assemblies 41, 43 with flat blanket 5 centered within the tooling assembly 7. The blanket is supported on the outer surface 67 of the base portion 53 and the embossing ring 57 of the lower tooling assembly 41 Figure 3 shows the tool assembly 41 starting to move to the closed position. In one embodiment, the lower tooling assembly 43 can be moved in the Z direction such that the outer peripheral portion of the blanket 5 is maintained between the embossing ring 57 of the lower tooling assembly and the embossing ring 79 of the upper tooling assembly 41. In one embodiment , as the lower tooling assembly 43 moves towards the upper tooling assembly, the embossing ring 57 pushes an outer portion 87 of the blanket 5 against the embossing ring 79 such that the outer portion 87 is trapped between the fixing surfaces 88, 89 of the respective stamping rings 57, 79. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the fastening surfaces 88, 89 can generally be angled upwards from the inside to the outside of the tool 7. The inclination of the fastening surfaces 88, 89 can generally be in alignment with the slope of a bottom surface 90 of cavity block 71. In the position of Figure 3, the hinged nose 53 of the bottom tooling 43 pushes against the central portion 8 6 of the blanket 5 so as to initiate the formation of the bottom wall 11 and the side wall 13 of the container 3.
As shown in Figure 4, the hinged nose 53 pushes the central portion of the blanket 5 further up into the upper recess 73 of the cavity 71. In one embodiment, the hinged nose 53, the base portion 55 and the collar 59 can move together as the hinged nose is pressed into the upper recess 73 such that the outer surface 65 of the base portion and the molding edge 68 of the collar are generally arranged above an upper surface 93 of the base 63. A The molding edge 68 of the collar 59 can be adjacent to the interior of the stamping ring 57. As the molding portion of the male 51 of the tool assembly 51 moves into the cavity 71, the stamping rings 57, 79 are retaining the outer peripheral portion of the blanket 5 and the central portion of the blanket moves into the cavity.
As shown in Figure 5, the base portion 55 is further raised and propelled against the hinged nose 53 such that the outer surface 65 is in contact with the blanket 5 press the blanket further against the upper recess 73 of the cavity block to further shape the side wall 13 of the container 3. As the base portion 55 is raised, the stamping rings 57, 79 continue to hold the peripheral portion of the blanket. In the illustrated embodiment, the collar 59 is raised together with the base portion 55.
As shown in Figure 6, the tap surfaces 65, 67 of the molding portion of tap 51 and the surface of the upper recess 73 of cavity 71 maintain by contact with the inner portion 86 of the blanket (for example, side wall 13 and the bottom wall 11), thus fixing the side wall and the bottom wall between the molding portion of the male 51 and the cavity block 71. The base 63 is moved towards the first tooling assembly 41; such that the upper surface 93 contacts the embossing ring 57 and the base 63 pushes the embossing rings 57, 79 towards the support 70. The embossing rings 57, 79 move upwards relative to the collars 75, 77 and the block cavity 71. Therefore, an outer peripheral portion of the flange 15 is curved in the direction of the cavity to form a skirt 91 (for example, the bottom portion 19 of the flange 15) around the edge of the flange 15. At the position of the 6, skirt 91 is adjacent to the first collar 75, which is lower than the second collar 77, and a free edge of skirt 91 is adjacent to the molding edge 82 of the second collar 77. Particularly, collar 75 is positioned with the molding edge 80 adjacent and generally in alignment with the bottom surface 90 of the cavity block 71. The molding edge 80 is spaced from the molding edge 82 of the collar 77 such that a molding portion of the skirt 95 is defined by the edges from mo Separate filings 80, 82 and the outer surface of collar 75. Therefore, the molding edge 80 of collar 75 restricts the inner portion (e.g., upper portion 17) of flange 15 while stamping rings 57, 79 pivot the outer portion of the flange 15 relative to the inner portion for positioning the skirt 91 in the molding portion of the skirt 95. The skirt 91 can be shaped in other ways without departing from the disclosure.
As shown in Figure 7, the first collar 75 is lifted and moved away from a position of contact with the flange 15 such that the curved surface 81 of the first collar is adjacent and generally in alignment with the curved surface 83 of the second collar 77 The upward movement of the collar 75 can be limited by a collar stop 97 of the holder 70. In this sense, the combined adjacent surfaces 81, 83 of the collar 75, 77 create a curved surface of the molding characteristics of the flange 85 for the winding of the collar. skirt 91 under the edge of tray 3 to mold the rolled flange 15. To improve the wrapping process of skirt 91, the first and second collars 75, 77 can be made with segmented vertical interlock grooves.
As shown in Figures 8 and 8A, the collar 59 of the lower tool assembly 43 is raised to press against the peripheral portion of the blanket 5 (for example, the upper portion 17 of the flange 15). Therefore, the projection 69 of the collar 59 presses against the peripheral portion of the blanket 5 so as to form the indentation 21 in the upper portion 17 of the flange 15 of the container 3 (Figure 1).
In the illustrated embodiment, the final step of closing tool 7 is shown in Figures 9 and 9A. The lower tooling assembly 43 moves in the direction of the upper tooling assembly 41 forcing the cavity 71 to move and forcing the bottom against the support 70. In addition, the base 63 urges the stamping rings 79, 57 to move towards the cavity 71 until the stamping ring 79 forces the bottom against the support 70. The collars, 75, 77 remain in the position shown in Figure 8 with surfaces 81, 83, forming the forming surface of the rolled flange. As the stamping rings are lifted, the stamping ring 57 of the lower tooling assembly 43 moves into a segmented pattern of engagement in the outer collar 77. Therefore, tool 7 moves blanket 5 upwards relative to the collars 75, 77, and the free edge of the skirt 91 is pushed against the curved surface 83 of the outer collar 77 and then against the curved surface 81 of the inner collar 75 until the tool 7 closes completely. the edge of the skirt 91 is pushed against the molding edges 80, 82, the molding edges fold the skirt 91 towards the upper portion 17 of the flange 15. The flange 15 of the container 3 is now formed with the skirt 91 forming the portion lower 19 of the flange that has been wound under the upper portion of the flange, and the molding edge 68 of the collar 59 is holding the upper portion 17 and the lower portion 19 of the flange 15 against the molding edges 80, 82 of the collars 75, 77 .
In the illustrated embodiment, the lower tool assembly 43 can move away from the upper tool assembly 41 to open tool 7 after the formation of container 3. Container 3 can be released and ejected, or otherwise removed and tool assemblies 41 , 43 can be repositioned to the position shown in Figure 2, to receive another blanket 5.
The tooling assembly 7 of the present disclosure is configured to allow a tool to perform both the function of molding the bottom wall 11 and the side wall 13 of the container 3 and the function of molding the rolled flange 15 of the container. This one-step forming process of the present invention allows the container 3 to be completely molded by a single tool 7 and eliminates the need for a two-step molding process using multiple tool assemblies. Such integration of the molding functions of the container in a single tooling assembly 7 provides lower tooling costs, waste reduction and greater manufacturing efficiency.
The upper tooling assembly 41 and the lower tooling assembly 43 can commonly be mounted on a machine (not shown) of the type manufactured by Peerless Machine & Tool Corporation in Marion, Indiana, USA, or any other suitable machine. The machine can provide primary compressive forces to sufficiently close and open the tool assemblies 41 and 43 of the present disclosure. The closing and opening of tool assemblies 41, 43 by the machine can form articles or three-dimensional containers; such as container 3. On other types of machines, tool assemblies 41, 43 may include minor revisions or modifications to allow tool assemblies to operate in a variety of alternative orientations from the illustrated embodiment. For example, the first tooling assembly 41 can be positioned below the second tooling assembly 43 without departing from disclosure. In addition, tool assemblies 41, 43 can be positioned at an angle to the vertical axis Al shown, without departing from the disclosure. It should be understood that the operating position and / or sequence of the tool assemblies 41 and 43 shown and described here are not intended to limit the scope of the disclosure.
The foregoing description of the disclosure illustrates and describes several representative modalities. Various additions, modifications, alterations, etc., can be made to the representative modalities, without departing from the spirit and the scope of the disclosure. It is intended that all matters contained in the description above or shown in the accompanying drawings are to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a sense that limits the scope of the present invention. In addition, the disclosure shows and describes only selected modalities of the disclosure, but the disclosure is capable of use in various other combinations, modifications and environments, being capable of alterations or modifications within the scope of the inventive concept, as expressed here, evaluated in according to the above teachings, and / or within the skill or knowledge of the relevant art. In addition, certain aspects and characteristics of each modality can be selectively exchanged and applied to other illustrated and non-illustrated modalities of the disclosure.
