[0020] Although the description is addressed to a mobile terminal in the description below, the present invention is not limited to the same, but can be applied to all types of devices equipped with a touch screen. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the mobile terminal is one of several different types of information communication devices and multimedia devices, such as a touch screen enabled device and, preferably, it can be a cell phone, a portable multimedia player (Portable Multimedia Player - PMP), a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), a Smartphone and an MP3 player. In particular, the present invention can be applied to portable devices equipped with a screen with an intermediate or large size equal to or greater than 7 inches, as well as a small screen size equal to or less than 4 inches.
[0021] Figure 1 is a diagram illustrating a configuration of the mobile terminal in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The mobile terminal 100 according to a predefined embodiment of the invention includes a radio frequency (RF) unit 110, an audio processing unit 120, a storage unit 130, a touch screen 140, a key input unit 150 and a control unit 160.
[0022] The RF unit 110 is responsible for transmitting and receiving radio signals that carry data. The RF unit 110 includes an RF transmitter for upward conversion and amplification of the transmitted signals and an RF receiver for upward conversion and amplification of the received signals of amplification with low noise emission and downward conversion of the received signals. The RF unit 110 sends the received data over the radio channel to the controller 160 and transmits the data sent by the controller 160 over a network (not shown).
[0023] The audio processing unit 120 includes a codec pack and the codec pack can include a data codec (not shown) to process packet data and an audio codec (not shown) to process audio signals, including voice. The audio processing unit 120 converts a digital audio signal into an analog audio signal via the audio codec, in order to reproduce an analog audio signal through a loudspeaker in the form of an audible sound wave and converts the analog audio signal input through a microphone (MIC) to the digital audio signal.
[0024] The storage unit 130 stores the programs and data necessary for the operations of the mobile terminal 100 and can be divided into a program region (not shown) and a data region (not shown). The program region stores the programs to control the general operations of the mobile terminal, an operating system (Operating System - OS) to initialize the mobile terminal, the application programs necessary for playing multimedia content and other application programs necessary to support other handset functions 100. For example, other functions can be a camera function, an audio playback function, a still image playback function and / or a moving image (video). The data region stores the data generated as a result of the operation of the mobile terminal 100. For example, the data region can include information about still images, moving images (video data), phone book and audio data.
[0025] The touch screen 140 includes a touch detection unit 141 and a display unit 142. The touch detection unit 141 detects a touch input made by the user. The touch detection unit 141 can be implemented with one of a touch sensor (such as a capacitive overlay touch sensor, a resistive overlay touch sensor and an infrared beam touch sensor) and a pressure sensor . The touch-sensitive unit 141 can also be implemented with any of the sensors that can detect contact or pressure on the screen made by an object. The touch detection unit 141 can detect a user input made by a user's touch gesture and generates an input signal to the control unit 160. The input signal includes the coordinates that define the position at which the input of the touch is made. In the event that a motion touch gesture is detected, the touch sensor unit 141 generates an input signal that includes coordinates in the motion touch gesture path to the control unit 160. In one embodiment of the present invention, the movement touch gesture can be classified into one of two categories: rapid movement, in which the speed of the movement touch gesture is equal to or greater than a predetermined value, and a drag, in which the speed of the touch gesture of movement is less than the predetermined value.
[0026] Display unit 142 can be implemented with one of a Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) and an Active Matrix OLED (Active Matrix) OLED - AMOLED) and presents menus, user input data, information about function settings and other information to the user in a visual data format. Display unit 142 is responsible for displaying a startup screen, a standby screen, a menu screen, a call progress screen and other application execution screens. In one embodiment of the present invention, display unit 142 can provide a screen composed of a category region that has categories classified according to more conceptual classification criteria, an index region that presents the indexes belonging to the currently selected category and a content region that presents the content indicated by the currently highlighted index, as will be discussed later.
[0027] The key input unit 150 receives a key input made by the user to manipulate the mobile terminal 100 and, as a consequence, generates an input signal to the control unit 160. The key input unit 150 can be implemented with a key pad that has alphanumeric and navigation keys and additional function keys formed on one side of the mobile terminal 100. In the case where the mobile terminal 100 is configured to be fully manipulated through the touch screen 140, the key entry unit 150 can be omitted, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
[0028] The control unit 160 controls the operations of the mobile terminal. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the control unit 160, which can be represented as a processor or a computer, controls the display unit 142 to display the screen made up of a category region that has the categories classified according to with more conceptual classification criteria, the index region that presents the indexes belonging to the currently selected category and a content region that presents the content indicated by the currently highlighted index. When a touch gesture to select one of the indexes, except the currently highlighted index, is detected by means of the touch sensitive unit 141, the control unit 160 controls the display unit 142, so that the content corresponding to the selected index is displayed in one direction from the selected index to the originally highlighted index. In the case where the indexes are positioned in series in a horizontal direction, the control unit 160 controls the display unit 142, so that the content corresponding to the index selected by the user appears in the direction from left to right when the user selects the index positioned to the left of the currently highlighted index, and controls display unit 142, so that the content that corresponds to the index selected by the user appears in the right to left direction when the user selects the index positioned to the right of the currently index highlighted.
[0029] Figure 2 is a flow chart illustrating a method of displaying the mobile terminal on screen in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
[0030] With reference to Figure 2, the control unit 160 controls the display unit 142 to display a screen composed of the category region with the categories classified according to the most conceptual classification criteria, an index region that presents the indexes belonging to a currently selected category and a content region that presents the content indicated by the currently highlighted index (201). The index region shows the indexes in which an index is highlighted. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the index region can be configured so that the indexes are positioned in series in a horizontal direction or in a vertical direction.
[0031] According to the illustrated embodiment, the display screen is composed of the category region located at the top, the content region below the category region and the index region below the content region. According to another embodiment of the present invention, the display screen can be composed of the category region at the top, the content region and the index region positioned horizontally below the category region, the index region being located on the left or to the right of the content region. The display screen can also be configured so that the index region, content region and category region are located in series from left to right. The display screen can also be configured so that the category region, content region and index region are located in series from right to left.
[0032] In an exemplary embodiment of the present invention, the display screen can be an agenda management screen, for example. In this case, the category region can include the categories "date", "week" and "month"; the index region can include indexes 1 through 31 for dates, 'Sep 1-7, Sep 8-14, ... indexes for weeks, Jan, Feb, Mar, ..., Dec indexes for months ; and the content region can include daily calendar content, weekly calendar content, and monthly calendar content, respectively. The content located in the content region can be configured in the form of a card item that represents a combination of the content in the content region and a list of indexes in the index region.
[0033] Figure 3 is a diagram illustrating a calendar application screen of the mobile terminal 100 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The calendar application screen in Figure 3 includes a category region, an index region and a content region. The category region includes the Date, Week, Month, and List categories. The Date category is the category for showing the daily schedule, the Week category is the category for showing the weekly schedule and the Month category is the category for showing the monthly schedule. Meanwhile, the List category is the category for showing the list of items that represent individual calendars. In Figure 3, the category region is provided with a Today key area (that is, a tab). The Today key area is a navigation key for moving to the current date (that is, today) to quickly show content that belongs to the current date.
[0034] The index region includes the date indexes of 1, 2, 3, ... classified in the Date category and organized in series with a currently selected index, for example, 16, highlighted.
[0035] In the content region, the currently selected index of '16' is displayed. The content region can be configured on an item as shown or combined with the list of indexes in the form of a card. The content region of Figure 3 is composed of an organizer section that presents the items scheduled by hour and an All date 'section that presents all the items scheduled for the corresponding date. The content in Figure 3 also includes a data indication section that provides information about the date, for example, Wednesday, April 16, 2010, and a new item key to create a new item.
[0036] In this illustrative embodiment of the present invention (i.e., a calendar application screen), the display screen is composed of the index region and the content region without the category region.
[0037] After displaying a calendar application screen composed of the index region and the content region in step 201 (with or without the category region), the control unit 160 monitors the system to detect a key entry to select one of the indices (202). The user can make a touch gesture to select an index on the display screen or a touch and move gesture in which a touch is made and then lifted after moving over the target index. In the case where the handset is configured without a touchscreen (or in the case where an auxiliary key input is available as a supplement to a handset with a touchscreen), the control unit 160 can recognize the selected index by the user based on the key input via the key input unit 150.
[0038] If an input (via the touch screen or a key input device) to select an index is detected (step 202), the control unit 160 controls the display unit 142 so that the content that corresponds selected index appears in the direction of the selected index position for the highlighted index position (203). That is, the control unit 160 determines the relative position of the index selected by the user with reference to the currently highlighted index and changes the display in an appropriate direction. In the case where the indexes are located in the horizontal direction (that is, from left to right or from right to left), the control unit 160 determines whether the index selected by the user is positioned to the left or to the right of the currently highlighted index . In the case where the indexes are located in the vertical direction (that is, from top to bottom or from bottom to top), the control unit 160 determines whether the index selected by the user is positioned above or below the currently highlighted index.
[0039] The control unit 160 then controls the display unit 142 so that the content corresponding to the selected index appears on the screen in the direction of the selected index for the currently highlighted index. In the case where the indexes are located horizontally (for example, from left to right), the control unit 160 controls the display unit 142 so that the content corresponding to the selected index appears in the direction from left to right when the selected index is positioned to the left of the currently highlighted index and in the right to left direction when the selected index is positioned to the right of the currently highlighted index. In the case where the indexes are located vertically (for example, from top to bottom), control unit 160 controls display unit 142 so that the content corresponding to the selected index appears in the top-down direction when the selected index is positioned above the currently highlighted index and in the bottom-up direction when the selected index is positioned below the currently highlighted index.
[0040] When the content appears, the control unit 160 can control the display unit 142, so that the content corresponding to the selected index is presented so as to be on top (overlay) of the previously displayed content. That is, the control unit 160 can control the display unit 142 so that the content of the index selected by the user covers the content previously displayed without removing the previous content.
[0041] The control unit 160 can also control the display unit 142 so that the content region and the index region are modified, while maintaining the presentation of the category region. In the case where the contents and the index list are configured as an item in the form of a card, when the user selects one of the indexes, the control unit 160 controls the display unit 142 so that a card formed by combining the list of indexes, in which the selected index is highlighted, and the content that corresponds to the selected index appears on the previously displayed card.
[0042] Figure 4 is a diagram illustrating an operation of changing the screen of daily display of a calendar application when an index positioned to the right of the currently highlighted index is selected on the mobile terminal in accordance with the embodiment of the present invention.
[0043] Part [a] of Figure 4 is identical to Figure 3.
