SEAT ASSEMBLY FOR AN AUTOMOTIVE VEHICLE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention [0001] The present invention relates to a seat assembly for a vehicle adapted to be mounted on a vehicle floor by a rail assembly and including a pivotal seat backrest coupled to a seat cushion by a reclining mechanism in which an easy-entry memory mechanism allows the seat assembly to slide back and forth along the rail assembly between a design position and a fully forward position in response to the pivoting movement of the seat back while memory of the project position is maintained.
2. Description of the Relevant Technique [0002] Automotive vehicles typically include one or more seat assemblies having a seat pad and a seat back to support passengers above a vehicle floor. The seat assembly is commonly mounted on the vehicle floor by a seat rail assembly to provide forward and backward adjustment of the seat assembly for passenger comfort. The seat back is also typically pivotally coupled to the seat cushion by a reclining mechanism to provide pivoting movement between a vertical seat position, a plurality of reclined positions, and a folded forward position at least partially covering the seat cushion.
[0003] The seat rail assembly provides for sliding back and forth by moving the seat assembly between a design position, a plurality of passenger comfort positions, and a fully forward position. It is commonly known to provide a release mechanism to selectively unlock the reclining mechanism to provide the pivoting movement of the seat back to the forward folded position. It is also known to provide an input release mechanism
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 6/52 / 11 easy to unlock the seat rail assembly in response to the pivoting movement of the seat back to the forward folded position. It is known to operate both release mechanisms to allow pivoting movement of the seat backrest to the folded forward position and to slide the seat assembly forward to the fully forward position to allow easy entry and easy egress from inside the vehicle. behind the seat assembly.
[0004] It is desirable to provide an easy entry memory mechanism, which allows the seat assembly to slide back and forth along the rail assembly between the design position and the fully forward position in response to the pivoting movement of the backrest seat to the forward folded position while the design position memory is maintained.
[0005] US patent 5,944,383 discloses an easy-entry seat rail assembly with memory, comprising a lower rail assembly and an upper rail assembly, which can detachably slide into the lower rail assembly. A master lock assembly in a locking position loosely secures the upper rail assembly to the lower rail assembly in an initial position. A rod is affixed to the lower rail assembly, preferably on a lower rail, and a memory register comprising a wrapping spring is positioned around the rod. A memory drive mechanism moves the memory register from a normal condition to a memory position that disengages the master lock, allowing the upper rail assembly to slide over the lower rail assembly to a free position. The return of the upper rail set to the initial position returns the master lock to reengage with the lower rail set and then returns the memory register to the normal condition. The memory drive mechanism comprises a rotary lever from a first position, in which the memory register is in normal conditions, up to a position of
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 7/52 / 11 operation where the memory register is in the memory position and the rotary lever pushes the master lock to the unlock position. The memory register remains in the memory position and the master lock remains in the unlock position until the top rail assembly returns from the free position to the home position.
[0006] US 5,944,383 discloses an easy entry seat rail assembly with full memory comprising a lower rail assembly and an upper rail assembly, which can be releasably slid in the lower rail assembly. A master lock assembly in a locking position reliably secures the upper rail assembly to the lower rail assembly in an initial position. A rod is affixed to the lower rail assembly, preferably on a lower track, and a memory register comprising a wrapping spring is positioned around the rod. A memory actuation mechanism moves the memory register from a normal condition to a memory position and disengages the main lock, allowing the upper rail assembly to slide over the lower rail assembly to a free position. Returning the top rail set to the home position returns the main lock to re-engage the bottom rail set and then returns the memory register to normal condition. The memory actuation mechanism comprises a rotating cam lever from a first position, where the memory register is in normal condition, to an operating position where the memory register is in the memory position and the cam lever pushes the lock main to the unlock position. The memory register remains in the memory position and the main lock remains in the unlock position until the top rail assembly returns from the free position to the home position.

With reference to figure 1, the seat assembly 10 includes a seat pad 12, generally horizontal, and a seat back 14, generally vertical, operatively coupled by a mechanism
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 10/52 / 11 reclining 16 to seat cushion 12 to provide pivoting movement between a vertical seat position, a plurality of reclined positions, and a forward folded position covering at least partially the seat cushion 12, as is commonly known for a person specialized in the technique. The seat assembly 10 is adapted to be mounted on a vehicle floor 18 by a seat rail assembly 20 to provide forward and backward adjustment of the seat assembly 10.
[00010] The seat set 10 shown in figure 1 is commonly known as a seat type seat set divided into 60-40; however, a complete seat type seat set or single bucket type seat set can be used without varying the scope of the invention. Seat cushion 12 typically includes a seat cushion frame to support a cell foam pad encased in a liner cover and seat back 14 typically includes a seat back frame to support a cell foam cushion encased in a lining coverage, as is commonly known to a person skilled in the art. The seat pad 12 includes a plurality of seat pad supports 22 fixedly attached to the seat rail assembly 20 and the seat back 14 includes a plurality of seat back supports 24 pivotally coupled to respective seat pad supports 22 by a reclining mechanism 16. Reclining mechanism 16 is a disc reclining, as is commonly known in the art, however, it can be any type of reclining mechanism to provide the selective pivoting movement of the seat back 14 in relation to the seat cushion 12 The reclining mechanism 16 of the disc reclining type is fully disclosed in US Patent 6,312,053, which is incorporated herein for reference in its entirety. A reclining release mechanism 26 is operatively coupled to the reclining mechanism 16 to selectively unlock the reclining mechanism 16 and allowing the pivot movement of the seat back 14 between the position of
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 11/52 / 11 seat, reclined positions, and forward folded position. The reclining release mechanism 26 can be any type known in the art to selectively actuate the reclining mechanism 16 between a locked condition and an unlocked condition allowing the pivoting movement of the seat back 14. [00011] With reference to figure 1, a first release cable 28 extends between a first release handle 30 and the reclining release mechanism 26 to actuate the reclining mechanism 16 between the locked and unlocked conditions to allow pivoting adjustment of the seat back 14 between the plurality of reclined positions. A second release cable 32 extends between a second release handle 34 and the reclining release mechanism 26 to actuate the reclining mechanism 16 between the locked and unlocked conditions to allow the pivot movement of the seat back 14 to the folded position to front.
[00012] The rail set 20 provides selective selective adjustment forwards and backwards of the seat set 10 along the vehicle floor 18. The seat rail set 20 includes an upper rail 36 that extends between the front and rear ends. opposing rear seats 38, 40 and slidably coupled to a lower rail 42 which extends between corresponding front and rear ends 44, 46. The seat cushion supports 22 are fixedly attached to the upper rail 36 adjacent to the rear ends 40. The lower rail 42 is fixedly attached to the vehicle floor 18. A seat rail locking mechanism 48 of any type commonly known in the art is operatively coupled between the top rail 36 and bottom rail 42 for selective actuation between a locked condition and an unlocked condition allowing the sliding movement back and forth of the upper rail 36 in relation to the lower rail 42. As shown in the figure 1, a pair of upper and lower rails 36, 42 are formed with spaced and parallel upper and lower rails to support the seat pad 12 on the vehicle floor 18. Each pair of upper and lower rails 36, 42
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 12/52 / 11 includes a locking mechanism 48 to act between the locked and unlocked conditions. A support bar 50 extends between and is operatively coupled to each locking mechanism 48 to act selectively and simultaneously locking mechanisms 48 between the locked and unlocked conditions, as is commonly known in the art.
[00013] With reference to figure 2, the seat assembly 10 additionally includes an easy-entry memory mechanism 52, operably coupled to the rail assembly 20 to allow sliding movement of the seat assembly 10 between a design position and a position fully forward in response to the pivoting movement of the seat back 14 while the memory of the design position is maintained. More specifically, the memory mechanism 52 includes a control cam 54 pivotally mounted on the top rail 36 by the pivot pivot 56. A first request spring 58 is coupled between the top rail 36 and the control cam 54 to request the control cam. control 54 counterclockwise when viewed in figure 2. A Bowden control cable 60 is coupled between the control cam 54 and a lower arm 62 of the seat back support 24 to rotate the cam control 54 clockwise in response to the pivoting movement of the seat back 14 between the seat position and the reclined forward position. A Bowden 64 release cable is coupled between the control cam 54 and the locking mechanism 48 to automatically actuate the locking mechanism 48 between the locked and unlocked condition in response to the rotation of the control cam 54.
[00014] The easy entry memory mechanism 52 also includes a memory arm 66 pivotally connected to the top rail 36 by a pivot pin 68 and extending longitudinally between a control end 70 and an opposite hook end 72. The pivot pin 68 is usually positioned halfway between the end of
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 13/52 / 11 control 70 and the hook end 72. The memory arm 66 includes an upper inclined cam surface 74 that extends between the pivot pin 68 and the control end 70 to engage with a cam pin 76 protruding outwardly from the control cam 54. The cam pin 76 is guided along the cam surface 74 to actuate the memory arm 66 between an elevated and a lowered position. A second request spring 78 extends between the cam pin 76 and a spring bar 80 that protrudes from the control end 70 to maintain engagement between the cam pin 76 and cam surface 74 and requesting the memory arm 66 to the raised position. The hook end 72 includes a front guide surface 82 facing the front end 44 of the lower rail 42 and an opposite hook surface 84 facing the rear end 46 of the lower rail 42. The hook surface 84 engages a stop tab. 86 projecting from the bottom rail 42 when in the lowered position to define the design position.
[00015] In operation, with reference to figures 2-10, the seat set 10 is shown in the design position with the seat back 14 in the vertical seat position, or a reclined position. The reclining mechanism 16 is in a locked condition that prevents the pivoting movement of the seat back 14 and the rail locking mechanism 48 is in a locked condition that prevents the sliding movement back and forth of the seat assembly 10 along the rail assembly 20. The first release handle 30 can be actuated to unlock the reclining mechanism 16 and allow the pivoting movement of the seat backrest 14 without activating the rail locking mechanism 48, as is commonly known in the art. In the actuation of the second release handle 34, the reclining mechanism 16 is activated for the unlocked condition for the pivoting movement from the seat position to the forward folded position, as shown in figures 3 and 4. The movement
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 14/52 / 11 pivoting in front of the seat backrest 14 to the reclined forward position pull on the control cable 60 to rotate the control cam 54 clockwise, as shown in figures 3 and 6. The rotation of the control cam 54 allows the cam pin 76 to guide along the cam surface 74 of the memory arm 66. The second request spring 78 pushes the memory arm 66 to rotate from the raised position, shown in figures 2 and 5, to the lowered position, shown in figure 4, in front of the stop flap 86. The rotation of the control cam 54 also simultaneously pulls on the release cable 64 to actuate the rail locking mechanism 48 from the locked condition for the unlocked condition allowing sliding movement back and forth of the seat assembly 10 along the rail assembly 20. With the seat backrest 14 in the reclined forward position, the tension in the control cable roll 60 maintains the rotation of the control cam 54, and thus tension on the release cable 64, to keep the rail locking mechanism 48 open in the unlocked condition, allowing sliding movement of the seat assembly 10 to the fully forward position shown in figure 7.
[00016] With reference to figures 8-10, when the seat assembly 10 is returned back from the fully forward position, the hook surface 84 of the hook end 72 over the memory arm 66 engages the stop flap 86 on the lower rail 42 to keep the seat assembly 10 in the design position. In the design position, the seat back 14 can be pivoted back from the forward reclined position to the vertical seat position to release tension on the control cable 60. The control cam 54 is requested by the first request spring 58 to rotate counterclockwise, as shown in figure 9. Rotating counterclockwise of the control cam 54 also releases tension on the release cable 64 to return the rail locking mechanism 48 for
Petition 870190082256, of 23/08/2019, p. 15/52 / 11 locked condition and prevent further sliding back and forth of the rail assembly 20. Also, the cam pin 76 is guided along the cam surface 74 of the memory arm 66 while the second spring request 78 pushes the memory arm 66 to rotate from the lowered position to the raised position outside the stop flap 86, as shown in figures 9 and 10.
[00017] Finally, if the seat assembly 10 is positioned behind the design position where the memory arm 66 is behind the stop flap 86, when the memory arm 66 is in the lowered position, the front guide surface 82 of the hook end 72 engages the stop flap 86 to raise the memory arm 66 upwards and then over the stop flap 86 to return to the lowered position in front of the stop flap 86. Therefore, with the backrest seat 14 pivoted in the reclined forward position, the easy entry memory mechanism 52 always maintains the memory of the design position upon return of seat set 10. [00018] The invention has been described in an illustrative manner, it should be understood that the terminology, which was used, is intended to be in the nature of the words in the description, rather than limitation. Many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings. Therefore, it is to be understood that within the scope of the appended claims, the invention can be practiced differently than as specifically described.
