Background of the Invention
[0001] The present invention refers to an asset tracking system and an associated method. More specifically, this invention relates to a method and system for tracking vehicles.
[0002] Several systems have been developed for tracking stolen or stolen goods, such as vehicles, to allow vehicle owners and insurance companies to recover such goods. Most of these tracking systems require that a vehicle tracking unit be fitted or installed on the vehicle. The unit is typically required to determine and communicate its geographic position to a central control room. Geographic information is sent to the control room at intervals or when the unit is programmed by the system.
[0003] In general, the vehicle tracking unit includes a location module to determine the position of the unit. This location module is either a global positioning system (GPS) receiver that uses existing GPS technologies to calculate the position of the unit and therefore of the asset, or uses mobile device location technologies (eg GSM ) or radio technologies that employ a fixed network owned by radio transmitters. In these cases, triangulation or trilateration is used to determine the location of the property. On some systems, a combination of technologies is used to enable tracking. The central control room uses the information received for further processing to free up tracking services.
[0004] The systems described above require the implementation or use of network infrastructures and mobile tracking devices that are expensive to install and maintain. The high cost of installation and maintenance results in high investment costs, which are passed on to system subscribers such as high admission and monthly fees. Ultimately, this creates a barrier to admitting new subscribers who are from lower classes.
[0005] It is an objective of the present invention to provide a system and method for tracking goods. Invention Summary

[00029] In the following description, for explanatory purposes, numerous specific details are demonstrated in order to provide a complete understanding of a modality of the present presentation. However, it will be evident to the person skilled in the art that the present presentation can be practiced without these specific details or in any specific manner.
[00030] With reference to figure 1, an asset tracking system is shown in the form of a vehicle tracking system 10. The control means in the form of a control station 12 are in communication with multiple tracking units of mobile base station asset, indicated by a mobile base station asset tracking unit 14, by an existing communication network 16. Each of the mobile base station asset tracking units 14 are installed at an asset which is shown in Figure 1 as a vehicle 18. Although only one of the units 14 is shown, it is understood that a substantial number of units can be used in the system.
[00031] The existing communication network 16 may comprise the network infrastructure that allows the mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 to communicate its geographic location to the control station 12 at any given time. In an exemplary embodiment, the communication network 16 includes multiple fixed base stations, indicated by a tower 20 in Figure 1. The fixed base stations can be, for example, mobile cellular telephone network towers, radio transmitters that form a owned fixed network, or a suitable combination.
[00032] The multiple mobile base station asset tracking units provide a mobile base station network which is used by the signal asset tracking units, one of which is indicated by the reference number 22. Each of these units Goods tracking device 22 is installed in a second type or group of goods indicated by a second vehicle 24 in the example mode of Figure 1. As will become evident from the following description, the fixed base stations 20 are intended for supplement the coverage of the mobile base station communication network provided by the multiple mobile base station asset tracking units 14.
[00033] Again, for reasons of objectivity, it should be understood that a typical example embodiment of the invention will use multiple fixed base stations 20 and may include numerous signal asset tracking units 22.
[00034] The relevant signal asset tracking unit 22 communicates with a respective mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 when vehicle 24 is close to vehicle 18. Both units 14 and 22 are configured to communicate wirelessly, typically via radio communication and preferably via a 26A short band radio frequency link when units 14 and 22 are in the radio frequency band. Similarly, the signal asset tracking unit 22 is capable of communicating over a short band radio frequency link 26B with the fixed base station 20 whenever the unit 22 is in the base station's radio frequency band. fixed 20.
[00035] The signal asset tracking unit 22 comprises a processing module 28 and a short band communication module 30. A "module" in the context of the descriptive report can be implemented in software, hardware, or a combination of software and hardware. In a prototype embodiment of the system, the processing module 28 comprises a PIC microcontroller 46 that runs proprietary software.
[00036] A unique identifier is assigned to the signal asset tracking unit 22 in order to identify the unit within the system 10. The identifier is further associated with subscriber information that is stored in a database 32 at a station. central control (see below). Unit 22 can be self-powered via an internal battery, in which case no wired connection to vehicle 24 is required. Additionally or alternatively, the unit can be wired to a vehicle battery power circuit 24 for an extended operational lifetime.
[00037] The short band communication module 30 may be a radio frequency transceiver (or a separate transmitter or receiver) capable of receiving or transmitting the radio signals, which transmits the data to any base station asset tracking mobile 14 or to fixed base station 20 in its vicinity by short band radio frequency links 26A and 26B. The communication range of module 30 can typically be in the range of a few meters to approximately one kilometer.
[00038] In the prototype mode of the system, the short band communication module 30 comprises an RF transceiver 50 with an associated RF power amplifier 52, an RF antenna 54, and an operable transceiver switch 56 to control the transceiver 50. The unit 22 is provided with a battery pack 56, and both a light sensor 58 and a motion sensor 60 connected to the microcontroller 46. The functional block diagram of Figure 2 illustrates the components of the unit 22.
[00039] The signal asset tracking unit 22 operates by transmitting its unique identifier at certain times that are determined by the motion sensor 60. The motion sensor is used to determine when the vehicle is in motion, so that when the vehicle is moving the signal unit will transmit more often. This algorithm helps to extend battery life.
[00040] The unique identifier transmitted by the prototype signal unit 22 is 12 bits long and consists of a 32 bit ID code, the unit firmware version, a sequence number (used for the variable code in the system code used) and other unit status information such as your battery condition.
[00041] If the base station asset tracking unit 14 is within the range of signal unit 22 when signal unit 22 transmits a self-identifying message, base station unit 14 will then recognize the signal unit message in an acknowledgment message. The acknowledgment message includes information about what the signal unit should do. For example, if the signal unit is on a stolen vehicle list, the acknowledgment message will prompt the signal unit to enter a recovery mode to help the recovery team recover the vehicle.
[00042] The communication module 30 preferably operates in unlicensed frequency bands, for example, at 433 MHz. The transmitter transmit power emission is limited by the maximum permitted by law in the unlicensed bands, but it can be adjusted via software control to decrease the settings and thus decrease the range. Software algorithms control the optimal power output to maintain an acceptable balance between battery life and reliable communications. An operating algorithm is also intended to avoid interference in the frequency range, for example, where the proximity of many communication modules in the same geographic area can overload the frequency range.
[00043] Data may be transmitted in the form of a message comprising the unique identifier of unit 22.
[00044] Radio frequency links 26A and 26B can be monodirectional, in which case the short band communication module 30 would be configured to transmit data only. Alternatively, radio frequency links 26A and 26B could be bidirectional, in which case the shortband communication module 30 would transmit and receive the data. The processing unit 28 can further encode and encrypt the data before its transmission so as to make the wireless links 26A and 26B secure against external intervention and limit the effect of the interfering devices.
[00045] It should be noted that the signal asset tracking unit 22 can communicate its unique identifier in various ways to warn that it is in range or close to the asset tracking device of the mobile base station 14 and the station fixed base 20. In an operating mode, unit 22 waits for a programming signal from the asset tracking device of mobile base station 14 or fixed base station 20 before transmitting its unique identifier. In another mode of operation, unit 22 warns of its presence by transmitting its unique identifier at regular, irregular or predetermined intervals and then waits for a response message from the mobile base station's asset tracking device 14 and from the fixed base station 20. The unit 22 may also operate in a mode in which it transmits the unique identifier at intervals without waiting for a response from the unit 14 or the base station 20.
[00046] Unit 22 can also be placed in a recovery mode on the control station 12 instruction or a system recovery (not shown). For example, a command may be sent to processing module 28 of unit 22 in the event that vehicle 24 is stolen or stolen, to thereby position unit 22 in recovery mode. A similar command can be sent to the unit to turn off recovery mode.
[00047] A typical recovery system comprises equipment and methods that can detect the direction from which radio frequency signals are received. It can also be configured to receive and decode any messages received from the communication module 30. Similarly, it can be configured to transmit the messages in a protocol that can be decoded by the communication module 30. The retrieval systems are , usually installed in regionally based vehicles or in aircraft such as helicopters of recovery teams.
[00048] The command signals are transmitted to the signal asset tracking unit 22 by radio frequency links 26A and 26B, or from one of the mobile base station asset tracking units 14, a fixed base station 20 or the recovery system itself.
[00049] In recovery mode, the signal asset tracking unit 22 can announce a hazard or alarm condition by transmitting a hazard signal modulated by the unique identifier, by transmitting a hazard code modulated by the unique identifier in addition to its unique identifier, transmit the transmit data at a predetermined pulse rate and/or frequency and/or transmit the data at a higher and/or lower power emission level. Any of these transmissions would consider the distress signal by control station 12 or the recovery system. It should be understood that other forms of encoding or modulation can be used on the danger signal.
[00050] Now, with reference to the mobile base station asset tracking unit 14, this unit 14 comprises a short band communication module 34, a second communication module 36, a location module 38 and a processing module 40. Similar to unit 22, unit 14 also has a unique identifier assigned to it in order to identify the unit within system 10 and in order to identify any data received from unit 14. Unit 14's unique identifier it is also associated with subscriber information that is stored in database 32.
[00051] The short range communication module 34 is arranged to receive the unique identifier transmitted from the signal asset tracking unit 22 when the vehicle 24 is close to the vehicle 18. The short range communication module 34 is also configured to receive any other data, codes or signals that can be transmitted by unit 22 over short band communication link 26A. In an exemplary embodiment, shortband communication module 34 is a shortband radio frequency module.
[00052] The location module 38 of the mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 determines the geographic location of the mobile base station asset tracking unit and therefore of the vehicle 18 to which it is installed. In an exemplary embodiment, the location module 38 may be a GPS (global positioning system) receiver. Alternatively, location module 38 can be a system that relies on triangulation of radio signals from proprietary radio networks, or on the use of GSM tower positions from third-party networks to determine position.
[00053] The processing module 40 is configured to generate a location data message comprising the geographic location data determined by the location module 38, as well as the unique identifier of the unit 14 and the unique identifiers of any tracking unit of sign asset 22 installed on vehicles that are close to vehicle 18. It should be noted that the location data message may be date and time stamped to provide an indication of when vehicle 24 has been close to vehicle 18.
[00054] The second communication module 36 is configured to transmit this message and any other data messages over the existing communication network 16 to the control station 12. The communication module 36 will transmit the message in a format suitable for the communication network. 16. For example, a GPRS packet or an SMS message containing the relevant data could be sent via any third party GSM network or the data packet could be transmitted via a proprietary RF network.
[00055] Other data messages that can be transmitted to the control station 12 may include the status data received from the signal asset tracking unit 22, for example, to show whether or not the unit 22 is in the recovery and to diagnose data received from the unit, for example, battery status information.
[00056] The mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 can also receive the messages from the control station 12 and can forward these messages to the signal asset tracking unit through its short band communication module 34. These messages may include commands or instructions for messages to put the unit in or out of recovery mode, instructions to bypass and/or turn off specific signal asset tracking units, for example, where services have been discontinued, and/ or instructions for changing unit 22 operating modes. It should be noted that these messages or instructions must include the unique identifier of the unit 22 to which the messages are to be sent.
[00057] The processing module 40 of the unit 14 can also be configured to allow the short band communication module 34 to operate similarly to the short band communication module 30 of the signal asset tracking unit 22. For example , the processing module 40 can position the unit 14 into a recovery mode, with the short band communication module 34 which then transmits the danger signals to the other mobile base station 14 or to fixed base stations 20 within the short band radio communication range. The short range communication module 34 can also be configured to receive or transmit the encoded signals to and from auxiliary devices of the vehicle 14, such as panic buttons, remote control units, and driver and/or driver identification devices. trailer.
[00058] It should be noted that the mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 may be a single unit that is fitted to a vehicle 18. Alternatively, the short range communication module 34 and the processing module 40 may form a mobile base station module or device that is added as an after-sales fit through a custom electrically and mechanically interconnect module to an existing vehicle tracking unit
[00059] A prototype embodiment of the mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 is shown in more detail in figure 3. The first and second communication modules 34 and 36 each include an RF transceiver 62, a power amplifier 54, an RF antenna 66 and a transceiver switch 68. The first communication module 34 operates at 433MHz and provides a short band communication link to the signal units 22. The second communication module 36 is a GSM modem that provides a long band communication link to the control station 12. The location module 38 typically comprises a GPS module 70 with an associated antenna 72 and a dedicated power supply 74. The processing module 40 comprises a PIC microcontroller 76 with an associated power supply 78 which may comprise a battery or be arranged to use the vehicle power supply. The processing module includes flash memory 80 and reset circuitry 82. An acceleration meter 84 is connected to an input of the microcontroller to provide motion detection capability.
[00060] As shown by figure 1, the control station 12 includes a communication module 42 for communicating with the fixed base stations 20 and the mobile base station asset tracking units 14, as well as a processing module 44 In particular, the communication module 42 is configured to receive the location data messages from the units 14, and any other status or diagnostic messages that can be transmitted through the units 14. Commands such as to position a tracking unit of good signal in recovery mode, can also be transmitted from control station 12.
[00061] The processing module 44 is configured to process all information received from or to be transmitted to the units 14 or to the fixed base stations 20. For example, the processing module 44 extracts the unique identifier of an asset tracking unit 22 and the vehicle geographic location data 14 to thereby find a vehicle geographic location 24. Such information is accordingly associated and stored, for example, in the database 32, to thereby record a vehicle geographic location. 24. In the event that a vehicle 24 is stolen, the location of the vehicle 24 could then be tracked, although there is no direct communication between the control station and the signal good tracking unit 22.
[00062] It should be noted that the optimal operation of the system depends on a relatively high number of vehicles 18 carrying mobile base station asset tracking units 14.
[00063] Referring now to Fig. 4, an exemplary embodiment of data structures 86 of database 32 is shown. Typically, data is captured when a user subscribes to the asset tracking system. Vehicle or other asset information is captured to identify the asset to be tracked and to associate this asset with the relevant tracking unit. Vehicle information 88 may, for example, include a vehicle identification number (VIN) and/or chassis number, a vehicle engine number, a vehicle registration number, the make and/or model of the vehicle. vehicle and the title information 90 of a particular vehicle A. In an example embodiment, the recorded title right is associated with the information of one or more vehicles.
[00064] Proprietary information 90 may include the vehicle owner's personal details, for example, the vehicle owner's full name, surname, identification number or identity number, vehicle owner's home address, number the vehicle's driver's license, insurance details, or similar.
[00065] The information for tracking unit 92 is also stored in database 32. This information includes the unique identifiers of all tracking units, ie both the signal good tracking units 22 and the tracking units mobile base station asset 14. This information is used to identify the tracking units and the information associated with such units, for example, vehicle and property right information. Unique identifiers are also used in order to record the location information and status information of units in such identifiers. It is evident that the processing module 44 of the control station 12 would be able to search the database 32 for any relevant information through the use of the unique identifiers. When a compatible unique identifier is found, the vehicle information associated with the compatible unique identifier will be retrieved and used as required.
[00066] Vehicle information 88 and title information 90 can be captured and stored in the database 32 in any suitable way, for example, through interfaces made available on a web site.
[00067] It should be noted that the present invention allows the creation of a mobile base station communication network that can be used by relatively simple signal asset tracking units to communicate and determine the geographic locations of the units and their associated goods. Essentially, signal asset tracking units complement the greater capabilities of mobile base station asset tracking units. As the mobile base station communication network increases, with more and more assets being installed with the mobile base station asset tracking units, the efficiency of the signal asset tracking units and the system will improve. This is due to the fact that more mobile base station asset tracking units being installed on vehicles would provide a higher probability of a particular signal asset tracking unit being close to a base station asset tracking unit. mobile at any given time.
[00068] Although the invention has been specifically described in relation to a vehicle tracking system, it should be noted that the system could be applied in other tracking environments. It should be noted that the invention can be extended to applications where one signal asset tracking unit 22 may have the ability to communicate to another signal asset tracking unit 22 via radiolink not shown not shown in the drawings, but similar to 26A. In addition, any mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 may also be able to communicate with another mobile base station asset tracking unit 14 via a radiolink similar to 26A.
